Why would a company be in business if they aren't there to make money? I'm sure US Cellular is running at a loss every quarter, and they're looking for ways to lose even more in the future, right?

turning a profit is one thing....greed is something else! Also you might want to check your facts about US Cellular losing money every quarter! I'll keep my service with a company whoh actually CARES about it's customers not to mention a first class EVDO and voice network! The big boys can't hold a candle.

I'm sure the big boys don't give a damn about U.S. Cellular either. Turning a profit is good... Turning a larger profit is better. Capitalism at it's best. It isn't the company's job to regulate itself. If the government allows unfettered capitalism (or greed if you prefer) then they would be fools not to push the envelope to the limit.

The reality is, when a company offers a product that people want (creates demand), they can profit from the supply. When multiple companies offer similar products (of similar quality/price/etc.), it creates competition. Competition will, along with market based price regulation (what people are willing to pay), drive down prices.
The goal of any company is to maximize profits. This means they'll charge as much as people are willing to pay, and offer the best product they can to satisfy the demand of the largest amount of people. Anything else is icing on the cake.

I agree you can't compare service on companies like MetroPCS and Cricket to what AT&T and VZW offer. Not even in the same ballpark. I don't know much about US Cellular because I live in NJ.
