Sprint & Verizon are leaving ATT in the dust! ! !

See, this is what happens when a carrier like ATT takes $30 Iphone data charges and uses the charges as profits rather than investment in the network. And now ATT is getting left behind, far behind! The next 18 months are going to be very, very interesting seeing if these 4G networks take customers away from ATT.

Truth is, 4G is just for marketing purpose because HSPA+ is well capable of reaching VZW and Sprint 4G speeds.

True, but HSPA+ isn't unlimited data with either Tmo or ATT, whereas 4G is unlimited with Sprint/Clear.

HSDPA+ also doesn't require an extra fee...

But it's not unlimited, so therefore it's worthless. Speed is of no use to me if it has a data cap.

That's because you couldn't get people to pay for it.

yeah but long term LTE 4g is supposed to average Up/down speeds of 100 MBP, as of right now yeah HSPA+ can tread water but long term it'll sink. Hence the name Long Term Evolution. i think WiMax will eventully turn into LTE.

Neither HSPA+ nor VZW's 4g has been released yet to compare them... how do you make such statement? I don't even think anyone can tell for sure which 3g network is the fastest so far! 🤨

3g speeds depend on the time of day and rotation of the sun and moon, if the tide is out or in and if Venus is in line with Mars or not, the last test actually put at&t as the fastest, but the last test had them second, and the next test who know

The version of 4g rolling out is the lowest version (compare to EVDO revO or 3.6mb/s 3g) It will quickly ramp up to significantly faster speeds.

On top of that, it is significantly cheaper for data transmission than HSPA or EVDO is.

ATT and Tmobile will need to switch to LTE/WiMax eventually. They've stated that they they are going to. So obviously HSPA+ isn't "just as good" as 4g technology, or they wouldn't change.

Not to mention that HSPA+ requires new equipment, just like 4g will.

Actually HSPA+ is a simple upgrade with a low to moderate price for those who already have UMTS set up. HSPA+ will work for transitioning into LTE which buys GSM carriers a little time. With no viable upgrade path available, VZ had to jump on to LTE whereas ATT can wait a year before they begin commercial deployment of LTE and T Mobile can try to figure out where they can find some additional spectrum or who they can partner with. Its not that ATT is dragging there feet, its that they have an attractive option whereas the others did not.

EVDO rev B and C exist. It just doesn't make sense for them to waste money on it.

And what is ATT going to do once they go HSPA+/LTE with their rural coverage? Sure.. you can call it the boonies.. but do you really think that people are going to like having their only options be 21+HSPA/LTE or EDGE?

They do need to upgrade, but they aren't at the end of the road with their 3G network like Verizon/Sprint is. So AT&T customers get to benefit from the additional speed without having to pay an additional $10.00/month to access a limited 4G Network.

Verizon could upgrade to EVDO Rev B/C if they wanted to. They just don't see the point of wasting the money on it, when LTE is cheaper for transmission by almost 50% (and Qualcomm ceased development on UMB, the EVDO evolutionary upgrade). They're not at the end of the road, they just don't see a point in investing heavily in an already obsolete tech.

And that 10 a month also is for the additional features the evo has, not just 4g, as it's been released.

1) AT&T is actually investing heavily in its network.

2) Verizon and Sprint's 3G networks are basically at the end-of-the-road in terms of speed. AT&T's isn't.

3) Ask your mom how she'll feel about an additional $20.00/month to access the very limited 4G footprint while AT&T customers pull in similar (if maybe not quite as fast) speeds for no additional cost.

The important thing about 4G, well at least with Sprint is it's unlimited, speeds are worthless if there is a data cap, cause guess what people use speed for multimedia!!! And multimedia takes up a lot of data, so therefore if a network that is designed for speed has a data cap it's essentially usueless.

I use the living crap out of my iPhone and view a lot of H.264 media on Adult Swim and NBC over it, not to mention Truveo.

Only very rarely do I come anywhere close to 5GB of data usage, and on top of that AT&T doesn't really cap phones period. Only two months have I ever gone over 5GB (and they were well over it to the tune of 7GB-8GB respectively) and it wasn't an issue.

1. Playing catch up

2. EVDO Rev B and C. It's not end of the road. they chose to skip the stop gap tech.

3. That 10 fee is ONLY for the Evo (sprint) as of yet, and also includes several other features (not just 4g) There is no word on what the pricing for LTE will be. And there is no promises that an HSPA+ phone will be able to maintain the speeds they are promising. It took the 7.2mbs upgrade for most phones to see anything over 3.0mbs
