----- Great INFO on Wimax vs. LTE -----

Wimax and LTE are not competing against each other. There is no winner/loser. They are not made to destroy each other. Wimax is going nowhere. Ultimately wimax will have more coverage. Why? Because cities will use wimax for everything from parking meters to free wimax. Cable companies will use it as last mile of service. Walmart will use it for connections from store to store. Every corporation will use it to replace wifi and a wimax phone will be able to use all those towers for free. That is the wonderful thing about wimax. The standard says any app, any device, and any founding carrier. LTE is only a cellphone standard, only going to be used by cellphones. Comparing them is like comparing current 3g cdma to wifi. Completely different uses...

Exactly, sadly many people who favor LTE and bash Wimax haven't a clue. Wimax is optimized for heavy video and data use, as well as online gaming. Sprint will be pushing data, data, data, like never before. Data will be taking the place of voice, the HTC EVO being able to make video calls will showcase what Wimax is capable of.

I wonder if Sprint will come out with another 4G smartphone before the end of the year.

I became privy to similar information, a Sprint rep on the Wimax side of things, showed our company the architecture for future Wimax. In many cases, Wimax will be the backhaul for Citywide WiFi, similarly to how a commuter train in New Mexico is using Wimax as a backhaul: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/new-mexico -rail-runner-train-gets-lit-with-wimax-sets-a -good-ex/ Other commuter trains across the country will have similar Wimax systems.

Due to Wimax being more similar to an internet connection, makes it likely. There will be Wimax equipped Ambulances, Buses and Taxi's. LTE is better suited for voice as opposed to data, Wimax is highly optimized for data, although can carry a very-strong voice signal. One of the reasons Clears CEO i...

If WiMAX is what the OP claims it to be, I could see Sprint supporting both LTE & WiMAX. They could use LTE for their 1.9ghz spectrum and keep WiMAX on their 2.5ghz spectrum. In many markets, there's around 200mhz of 2.5ghz spectrum, & there's more than enough spectrum to handle the traffic they get on WiMAX.

Ultimately, I guess we will see. I envision issues with having only Sprint as its major backer in the US. BTW, I find the articles' reference to T-Mo's HSPA+ pretty funny, seeing as how it smoked Clearwire's WiMax at their tech demo in Philly. Not saying WiMax doesn't have benefits, but I am not seeing much in its current state.

How is an average of 6mbps speed on hspa+ smoking WIMAX at over 10mbps in most markets? I am at the fringe of WIMAX coverage and get 6mbps. How does a product that can burst at a maximum of 21mbps smoke a product that can burst at 40mbps? What about latency and upload speed?

No 3G product will ever "smoke" a 4G product. Download speeds may be comparable but there is more to data throughput than download speeds.

With all of the 4G bandwidth Sprint/Clear owns they don't have to choose between the two. They can deploy both and still have more spectrum than anyone else for both LTE and WIMAX. If LTE is the network of choice for cell phone type users then they can deliver a consistent customer experience through roaming agreements.

Since you're claiming WiMax is going to be totally free, do you have a date that Clear customers can stop paying their bill and use the network for free? Who's going to pay for the massive deployments since subscribers won't pay to use it?

I'm not saying anything about the technical standpoint of WiMax vs. LTE, but I highly doubt that governments and corporations are going to throw money to build a totally free worldwide network. There's a little something called return on investment, and in your perfect consumer model, there is none.
