I think the main difference is they now have 2 other devices that are 2.1.

Honestly I dont know what to think of the hero update. They have sense 2.1, they have stable leaked roms so you know the coding is there.

HTC doesn't.

Verizon itself could have 50 phones on 2.1. It's not Verizon doing the updates... it's HTC.

I assume Verizon has to approve the changes, but it's still HTC programming on HTC phones.

Motorola Droid on 2.1 doesn't help HTC.

Brand new, just released Incredible... on different hardware... doesn't help HTC either. Different hardware requires different drivers, different software...

Same deal with Sprint and 2.1 on the Hero... Sprint could have 50 phones with 2.1, but until HTC feels comfortable enough with 2.1 on the Hero (and samsung feels good about 2.1 on the Moment) - and Sprint agrees with them - it doesn't matter.

I updated my HTC Eris with Android 2.1. It's just that I no longer use it because I purchased HTC Incredible. But you can get Android 2.1 for the Verizon's HTC Eris no sweat.

I know you can download unofficial updates and builds (Which is a strong point of Android btw), but officially... isn't it just Droid and Incredible?
