Nokia may sell a lot of handsets, but go through the following:

Viable Smartphone Platform? - Nope.

One successful software initiative? - Nope. In fact, I think you could argue that Ovi, et. al. have all been massive failures. But calling any one of them a success is false.

A singe successful model in the USA - Nope.

Excellent developer support? - Nope.

Any sort of vision as to where to take mobile computing? - Nope.

Going through it all, Nokia has sadly become nothing more than a peddler of cheap inexpensive handsets and poorly engineered smartphones to Europeans who don't know any better. None of those are sustainable long term (look at their numbers... ha!) so they're now play...

Its not only Apple and the iPhone, its also Android handsets. Nokia's best phone and its one heck of a great phone is the N900 which more or less is niche device. Their Symbian while excellent several years ago, is dated, even their new flavors. Sure overall the Symbian OS is the number one smartphone OS in the world. But lets be honest, most of the people who buy them, don't even use the power of it, and have no clue what it can be do. They are well made and nice looking. And btw, I own and e71 and N95.

Most of Nokia's growth is not in the europe where they are losing to Android and the iphone, but elsewhere in less developed countries. And honestly there is nothing wrong with that.

Saying all that, this is not about this selli...

Why is the US critical to the success of Nokia?

You are fanboy-maximus so explain to me, a European, living in New Zealand (with a second home in Nosara, Costa Rica) with 5 Nokia's, an iPhone & 2 iPad's why Nokia has to rule in the US to be relevant?

BTW, I can get more apps for my 5230 than I can for Android and my battery life is more than 8 hours at a shot too.

Also, are you aware that Nokia is making a pretty big push in the US? Between the N8, the Nuron (which is selling like 5 to 1 over the HD2) and a number of other phones that are coming out later this year. Symbian isn't dead but it's in a much better position than say Android or WebOS.

Apple is great but it's not the only boat in the sea.

"Fanboy-Maximus?" 🙄 Listen I'm giving you the dignity of a valid response so cut out the hyperbole and let's get to the facts.

1) Success in the US itself was one of the goals of Nokia's CEO: http://www.forbes.com/2009/09/02/nokia-ceo-us -markets-equities-business.html . Oh yeah, so far they've failed miserably- they're not even on the radar in the US. And like it or not, we're a huge market and a highly lucrative one at that. Additionally, success in the US market is crucial to tight integration with a lot of up and coming networking services (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)

2) How many of those apps are legacy applications? How many are actually game-changers? Probably none at this point. Hell you can get more apps for classic PalmO...

Honestly I can say I have never owned a bad nokia! I have had many in my day and LOVE em ... if they had a phone on my provider that did what I needed it to, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

According to global smart sales, why is it then that Nokia is greater than the sum of the iPhone & all Android combined????

Who is lying, you or facts?

No, I will not go through the following.

You had it right with the first line: Nokia is number one in the world.

They must be doing something right.

Apple fanboys. I live to hate them.

1. Nokia – 39.3%
2. Research In Motion – 19.4%
3. Apple – 16.1%
4. HTC – 4.8%
5. Motorola – 4.2%
6. Others – 16.3%

Well, it may not be 10 words, but it beats his essays on stupidity.
