Google is really undercutting...

Correct me if I am wrong (because I've not used Google's turn by turn), but this will pretty much put take Telenav away from most smartphones. Android and iPhone included.

What is wrong with free? This is America. The damn dirty Democrats haven't taken over everything yet. We still have a free market. Google can offer a product and charge whatever they want. They will make money other ways. If the other Nav companies want to compete, they will need to adjust their pricing and give me a compelling reason as to why their product is better and worth paying over the free product.

I can give you one example as to why certain paid GPS apps are better.

Google Navigation pulls the map data from the internet. If you are on a long road trip, you might find yourself in an area with no signal... then you can't download any map data.

With Tom Tom, Navigon, etc... the app comes with all of the map data pre-loaded o...

"What of yours/ours have they "taken over" and tell me about their poor hygiene."

Let's start with taking a lot of my tax money and going on a wild spending spree. Let go even further with their plan to stand in the middle of me and my doctor. I could go on and on... but this is a cell phone forum... not a political forum.

But the previous admin spent much more money and expanded the gov more than any previous admin and now you're suddenly a fiscal analyst? No one is standing between you and your doctor (please cite examples next time). You're right though, this is a political forum but remember... you started it 🤣 😈 😉

I'm done.

The DJIA was 10.8K when Clinton handed the reigns to Bush and 7.9K something when Bush handed it to Obama.... repubs tried to blame the low of 6.5K (jan to march) on Obama's first month and not the 10.8 to 7.9 on Bush's 8 years.... fast forward to the present... DJIA is chilling at 11K... IF... that's an indicator of who's handling the nation best... well...

Anyway, who brought this back up?

I wasn't talking about Tom Tom or Navigon. I specifically said Telenav, the company that streams your maps to your phone as you drive and charges you $10 a month. If google offers the same service at no charge, Telenav is screwed.

actually, your trip is cached, so you can go quite a bit with no data signal, providing you don't decide to detour during that time.

This is why the GPS can continue to run even if you take a call with a verizon phone (which cuts data stream during call)

I have been using AT&T navigator for over three years and am kicking myself for the 360+ tax I have spent in that amount of time.

Google maps is a good (albiet with a creepy voice) option because of the street view and the fact that it's free.

I personally have decided to use Navigon Eastern Region for the time being. $30.00 and I'm good to go with an incredible Navigation system.

I would use Telenav over Google Maps any day of the week! Telenav is more accurate, & they update the mapping system more than Google! not to mention Telenav gives you traffic info,Google does'nt! Plus they have support if you need it. Google....goodluck!
I'm not h8ing on Google, but your Telenav is a ripoff comment is stupid! BTW Telenav is also rated #1 in Gomrm products. Google is last!

It's a good navigation system, don't get me wrong. I just don't think it's worth $120.00 a year thats all, in fact, its worth far less than that, maybe $40-$50 tops making its actual price, IMO, a rip-off.
...

Apr 23, 2010, 3:03 PM
If you think about it, $120.00 a year is not bad. Concidering it can cost anywhere between $100 to $500 to upgrade the mapping information on most stand alone GPS systems. Those prices depend on the Make & Model of the device. I also dont see any other GPS system giving you all the features Telenav gives you.
Not to mention, you can cancel Telenav when you dont need it. rip-off? Not even close, compared to other paid gps services out there. Look at the value!!!!!!

I pay $30.00 for Navigon, it is 100% better in almost every conceivable way than telenav. The $30.00 covers the cost of the application forever. (unless you want to add traffic, $20.00)

When my girl and I travel, we battle over who uses what navigation service. I personally love my Navigon, she loves Google Navigation on her Droid (although the voice is CREEPY!!!!! I cannot stress that enough!) I usually win if we are heading into the city where street view is important, she wins if we are going through the country because honestly, satellite view is off the hook in Google map layers!

TeleNav IS a 100% complete rip-off if you own either the iPhone, an Android or any newer Nokia products.

I have put Telenav & VZ Nav Up against Google. Google lost badly! I have never herd of Navigon. but I am willing to bet they dont have the support that Telenav has, or a many features. I am not comparing the turn by turn, because I have never heard of or used Navigon.
Google Nav has the satellite view is cool, but thats all they got over Telenav.

Telenav IS a superior GPS product! Rated #1 for GPS on wireless phones.

You have traffic info through Google maps, it's a layer.

and as for your arguments to why it's not expensive.. you're missing the point. It's far too expensive to update maps on those devices period, which google is proving by offering the same service for FREE. No, it might not be up to par with telenav yet, but they're showing that the cost isn't what the companies are claiming.

Apr 23, 2010, 3:21 PM
Thats in Google maps. not Google turn by turn GPS. Telenav will advise you that there is a traffic alert, does Google......No! as far as your comment its the same service. not really. do a side by side comparison. Yeah, I know Google is free, but its crap! Why use a free service that give wrong info?? If its wrong, its wrong.BTW it cost money to update mapping info. If you think it cost to much, & you think companies like Telenav, Tom tom & VZW nav should update that info for free. I would suggest you try working for free. I havent missed any point, I'm looking a bigger picture.

No, you can activate Traffic in the navigation.

My telenav has gotten me lost just as many times as google maps, the difference being google maps finds a correction a HECK of a lot faster (I've done a comparison). On top of that, Google maps improves over time, it's still technically a Beta product, my telenav is on what? revision 5? and it still gets me lost just as frequently.. and the demand PAYMENT for the privilege of them getting me lost whole maps comes standard with my data package.

And yes, updating maps takes money, but it shouldn't cost almost the same amount as a WHOLE NEW DEVICE to get updated maps. This is doubly true since these companies rely pretty heavily on meta map data from sites like Google maps and Nokia's ma...

First off, most GPS companies get their mapps from Navteq & Atlas maps. Industry standards. btw thats where Nokia, Rim, Motorla etc. get the mapping info from. Also Teleanv & VZW Nav have a PROVEN Reliable Track record for GPS on wireless phones. Google has been shall we say lacking! I dont hate Google. I like the Driod device, but I will say Telenav & VZW nav beats Googles GPS hands down! In case you didnt know, Telenav is RATED #1 for GPS on Wireless phones! Proven look it up. Sure, Google is free,& its still in its so called beta stage.
As far as these companies wanting to be paid, maybe you should look at the Jobless rate. I dont mind putting money in the economy. Its only $10 bucks a month, & I dont mind paying for a Superior product ...

I'm a statistic of that jobless rate. Google employees thousands of people just fine and their products are very cheap as well.

Google employees are contracted for 1 year. & only 1 year!
I live by the Google office, & have freinds that have worked for them. I've even been on their campus. Have you....I bet not!
So I think I know more about Google than you!

Look up reviews on Google Nav Compared to other Navigation systems. The Google reviews are not that high. Google does have some cool stuff on their Nav service, but like I said before "Accuracy of routing is lacking in rural areas!" That has nothing to do with wireless carrier coverage.( just so I'm clear)

Maps do no update automatically.. you are prompted to download the new maps. Yes, it does this automatically, but it doesn't do it before you you open the program, leading to a delay before you can start. on top of that, the maps only update 1-3 times a year. Maps has updated 6 times in as many months.
