Apple Announces April 8 iPhone OS 4.0 Event
Anyone care to make predictions????
It sounds like a major overhaul... but is it?
I like the idea of multitasking, and maybe some customization tweeks *crosses fingers for something as simple as backgrounds*
I'd also like to see a way to respond to a text message right from the pop-up window, AND a way to make text pop-ups less intrusive. (kind of like the way the pre handles texting)
what do you think?
Cell phones don't interact the same way as you interact on a computer. So the flash games that rely on mouse-over (or other similar input schemes)... have problems playing on a cell phone - which don't have that type of interaction.
Plus all the vulnerabilities associated with flash...
For all the reasons to hate Apple, not having flash is low on my list personally. I could care less.
although, I would like to watch Hulu on my iPhone every once in a while.
HTML5 is supposed to help standardize this, amoungst other things.
Once the big players (YouTube, Facebook, etc) move away from flash - because they want in on the iPhone/Android/Palm/etc market as well - hopefully we'll see less and less issues with flash being "needed".
Also... Why would Apple support Flash when that would directly eat into their sales?
Sure... lets go thru the process and solve all the problems - using costly man hours - to create a platform on the iPhone/iPad that will do what? Enable you to...

Oh, and future revisions of Chrome will Natively support flash, so it won't require a plugin. I'm also sure that once it's part of the browser, the chance of it being used for attacks will go down because Chrome sandbox's itself.
and Flash10.1 (the newest flash update) exists BECAUSE it's mobile centric. It's developed to allow developers to make their games and apps finger friendly.
HTML5 is nice, but it is still far away from being a viable alternative to flash.
Adobe's been downright lazy optimizing Flash video playback- if you need further proof watch a 1.4ghz Powerbook struggle with 480p video encoded in flash but have no problem with H.264 720p. Yeah they're improving stuff now but 5 years of lazy development and it's too late.
(it's not just OS-specific, Chrome on Windows 7 stutters when encountering Flash embeds on my Netbook.)
2. You can't use a powerbook as an example. Steve jobs won't let them hardware accelerate flash on any apple product, mobile or otherwise. But even with that caveat, the ONLY configuration that allows html to use less resources than Flash is on a mac using Safari. ANY other configuration (mac or PC) has flash using less resources.
Boy genius just linked to an article that showed this.
Don't call flash lazy if steve was making them swim with only one arm behind their back.
And it's not platform specific- I have no problems playing 720p H.264 video in VLC on my EEEPC, but Hulu is out of the question.
And I don't know where you get this stupid idea that adding a Flash wrapper to an H.264 file uses less CPU resources. There's no simpler way to put it- you're wrong and have no idea what you're talking about.
Since you have a selective memory:

But then again, you probably won't read it again since this is the what? third time I've linked this article?
That BGR report took the numbers from Readwriteweb:

Mac TestsWith Safari
, HTML5 was the most efficient and consumed less CPU than Flash using only 12.39% CPU. With Flash 10.0, CPU utilization was at 37.41% and with Flash 10.1, it dropped to

The article is also written by a known Flash evangelist. And I don't want to call BS on the numbers but I don't think Ars Technica would be impressed by this fine bit of reporting.
1) Did you catch the obvious red flag that Safari 4 Windows "couldn't play the HTML5 video?" (Load of bull.)
2) The article claims Flash is inefficient on Macs because Apple doesn't allow access to private API's? Then why is CPU usage for the same videos d...

and how is someone who runs a streaming video site a known flash evangelist? the guy who showed it on android is one, but he openly admits it. The one who tested the results on a computer is not.
Or are you claiming cameron adams is a "known flash evangelist" as well?
1)actually, if you google it, it seems a lot of people are having issues getting it to work under Win7. For that matter, html5 video looks downright blocky in Chrome if you're watching it on anything bigger than a phone screen.
2) alright... an HTML5 is built into safari's browser (meaning it has ac...

That's why I posts about how excited he is about the apple tablet?
Wouldn't a flash evangelist write it off completely?
Unless you know how to get games that rely on mouse-overs to play with iPhone/iPad (or similar) inputs.
Also doesn't mean anything without platform support.
Chrome could have the best thing since sliced bread - but if Apple/Palm/Android/7/BB doesn't support them, that lead really doesn't matter for my phone.
And for a closed platform, like Apple, that refuses to enable anything *NOT* Apple in it's "core" areas... *Shrug*
I know H5 has issues... but it's going to get more support, progress and work than Flash will. Unless Adobe pulls something out of their hat.
That's what I'm trying to say. they ARE pulling something out of their hat, but apple's marketing machine is just pushing right by it, so most people are unaware about what's going on (since most tech blogs are admitted apple fans)
10.1 is a mobile flash, so the "issues" you present won't be issues with it.
But good, bad or indifferent the question is moot if the platform doesn't support it - and with none of the major platforms supporting it, it's simply irrelevant until supported.
Flash will never be that good.
Apple's stance is for developers to re-write their sites to fit HTML5's standards, rather than try to bridge it with legacy technology. Good for them- they're killing Flash and the overall experience of browsing the web becomes better for everyone (even those of you with Android and Palm handsets.)
You'll have to wait for them to get HTML5 up to a point where it can play 720/1080p
BTW, you're aware that Adobe wrote a version of Flash (using private API's) for the iPhone and showed it off to Apple. The battery life was something around 30 minutes. Ridiculous.
So either 1) the iphone is inefficient, or 2) adobe continue to develop. I'm guessing it's both.
Right now you sound just as foolish as the apple fan boys in retrospect how can anybody take what your saying serious?
Unbiased would be the way. π try it.
Steve blocking flash is well documented. As is how efficient flash for mobile can be if you allow it to be hardware accelerated.
My first real computer was a macbook, I love OSX. I hate the iphone so much because I see it as wasted potential.
and "unbiased" does not exist. anyone claiming not to be biased is lying to you
But Steve not allowing it is all business, not him personally wanting power because it gives him a erection as you and a lot others make it seem.
But at the same time, he's going too far with it. Flash isn't a direct competition anymore than html5 will be (if the html evangelists are to be believed) so why exactly is he blocking it? 10.1 is optimized for mobile. It's been shown in countless tests that the "it consumes resources" argument is shaky to say the least. So why block it? The only argument that seems to make sense is that he doesn't want to give them access to the api's that they need to make it as efficient as it seems to be at android.
I don't think he is power hungry so much as a little paranoid of giving u...

But I can say that I guarantee its business, weither or not adobe won't pay what Apple is asking or what, Ihdk.
But I'm sure its business.
Providing choice provides consumers the choice to competition which no person in any business for making money is not down for.
With it being so closed but yet great services are offered. The phone may not be able to do alot of things versus a Palm Pre and android phones but the "APPS" are what set it apart. They are able as a company to not spend so much money on per say the device but put more money in to marketing and how to make and have the money circulate back to you, its brilliant. You can spend more money on the h...

And pandora and slacker both give you the option to buy a song if you like what you're listening to.
The apps are nice, but they're starting to lose that edge.
In october, the android marketplace had about 10k apps. by december they were up to 16k. A few weeks ago, google announced that they were pushing 30k and growing. no, it's no "150k" apps, but it's growing quickly. with a lot of big name developers/apps announcing they are working on versions for android, including some that the Iphone doesn't even have. I'm beta testing Vlingo for android right now and it is FANTASTIC.
The only place that android is really lacking are games (which is changing as more devices are coming out with 2.1) and new...

But the other major thing is that one thing apple does have is that the iphone 1,2,and 3 I think? I think there has only been 3 or and its been what four or five years. So you know your "ONE" phone is good for a long time as opposed to having to get a upgrade to get a new phone and what not.
We're going to upgrade this device only once a year, and when we upgrade it, it's going to be a minor tweaks so that we can make sure that three year old hardware won't be challenged by the software. it's inhibiting innovation imo. Because instead of apple pushing out something that will push their latest hardware to the limits, they have to make sure it matches what they had three years ago (which is a very long time in computing terms)
and just because there are new phones available doesn't mean you NEED to upgrade to them. this "my phone needs to have the highest number to work right" bs is insane. The motorola droid is what? 6 months old? it will easily last a consumer 2 years...

It makes it more about "We" then "Android"
Apple is like "We" and android is like "Android" because there is more then one android and some people get benefits that the other don't and etc.
I see what your saying as well. With apple everybody lacks as a group as opposed to Android where as maybe the G1 users lack but the Droid users have to best sh!t android can offer.
They both have their up's and down's...
1) Faster rendering of info
2) Better screen resolution
3) More efficient
4) Optimized for upcoming 4G technology
5) Allowance of more customization
6) Multi-tasking
Otherwise... The same phone... but faster. Yawn.
fanboi: OMG, I love how he doesn't listen to a word I say! he's so smart!
π
While I hope they do truly innovate this time (I love OSx, just not how they handle the Iphone) it would mean a complete shift from what they've been doing, aka, admitting they were wrong, which I can't see them do. it would be very hard for them to implement anything on that list without looking like they were copying someone else, or backpedaling on their stances.
People have made this accusation for apple, how they don't want this and how they will never allow this and that. Apple has never said what they will allow or wont never allow, so what ever they do it won't sound like backpedaling.
And when the original iphone was launched, they pushed it as the "perfect" size for a touchscreen phone, so if the screen is any larger (or smaller) they are backpedaling.
and because a bunch of geeky employees say a Iphone 8 will come out doesn't mean Apple said they're coming out with a Iphone 8, it simply means that Ethan or what ever his name is told you that. Apple's PR never said these things that you say, and like I said I've read your threads all the time, so I know your much more educated then this. This here is just a tack and lack-lusting way of smearing apple's name. You can do better then that.
If someone starts a rational discussion, I'll join it. But it won't happen on this website
I can agree with that to a extent. There are alot of fan boys here. I just really skip a lot of their threads. but yeah now understand what your doing.
I have a couple friends in Google Wave who are really into phone tech. I spend most of my time there debating stuff now.
wave.google.com
there is a LONG video. if you want an invite, PM me.. I think I still have a few left
LMAO @ the fact that I'm for some reason a little hesitant to let my google guard down. π
They came out the middle of no where, got all this money, they are growing so fast, they never delete any of your information (EVER!), I don't know. They just grew too fast for my trust right now, lol, I know thats silly but I'll wait some time before I show them the cards in my hand.
I have my google configured not to track me (they give you an easy way to nullify their cookie and cloud searching) and even if you allow them to store the data, it's all non-specific if it ever leaves their servers.
apple is storing all your data right now (and they just bought an ad company) so the choice isn't IF you choose to share your data, but WHO you share it with. I've been using Google since they first offered gmail, and I STILL get less spam on my gmail account than I did after using my hotmail account for 2 months.
But I guess I would get a google account soon. Honestly thats what held me back from android or what is holding me back from android.
I know people say if your not doing anything whats to worry, I feel that but I was/ am a lil hesitant. Maybe I'll just force myself to get a gmail account but I had my yahoo account since like '99
As consumers, we throw a lot of information about ourselves out on the web everyday. google just found a way to categorize it (and make it more secure if we configure the portal) than if we just threw it anywhere.
and with android (or wave) you don't need to use your google account as your main account. it's just how google maintains your information should you need to get it replaced. (your apps, like how apple requires an apple account to record your music store purchases)
and remember, currently purchased items are the ONLY one's you can sync from your ipod/iphone/ipad back to your computer. so they are maintaining a record of it.
With gmail/android it keeps an authorization list of purchased apps for me. so if I delete one I paid for, it will ALWAYS show up in my downloads tab on the marketplace.
It wirelessly syncs my contacts, bluetooth profiles, etc. so when I had to hard reset my device (the joys of beta testing) as soon as a popped in my email, everything redownloaded to my device, without me having to be anywhere near my computer.
But yeah and all I see up's and down's about them all.

Seems you hit the nail right on the head on your predictions.
Apple has to be scared now that they have true competition (Palm, Android... even 7 on the horizon).
Unless Apple actually innovates, they have a very stale product.
In all actuality, I'm hoping to see somethng exciting. I've seen rumors and predictions and "they should do this" and "they could do that"... but nothing changes that their product has remained basically unchanged for four years.
We just have to wait for 7 to come!
We'll see.
Of course flash will always be useless. Multitasking...... well since Steve only has one thing on his mind (your money) why should your phone be capable of more than one thought.
Multi-tasking would be nice, but it does have trade-offs, so I'd say that's 50/50. If it happens, it won't be free-for-all multi-tasking... it will be semi-multi-tasking, or have very strict limits.
What would be really nice is to see them lift the ridiculous restriction on "competing" apps. The fact that you still can't run third-party email apps, fo...

Multi exchange accounts would be nice too as well as a missed call or voicemail notification. ThatΓΒ’Γ’βΒ¬β’s one thing I miss from my old phone, was a beep letting me know I missed something. If I step out of my office and come back and got a call it is hard to know unless you pick up your phone every time.
Could care less about flash, and a to be able to to reply back from a pop up notification without closing my radio app would be nice.
