really, do people really want an iphone on verizon cdma networks?? wasnt the "droid" supposed to be their flagship phone???? perhaps they are having the same reaction i had after seeing wirefly's droid and tmo's hd2 comparison. tmobile is really headed in the right direction, keep up the good work.

What innovation has the iPhone brought to the market in the last year or two? Better compass support? Copy/Paste? Better obfuscation of their app approval process?

While Google has it's problems, Apple has shaking in their boots at the amount of market share Android is gobbling up.

Unless you consider the loss of talk + data a selling point, this is simply Apple reacting to lost mind-share.

REALLY???? you honestly think the Droid will be Verizon's flagship phone all the way till next Christmas?

talk about beating a dead horse, everyone who wanted the Droid would of already had one. If you notice Apple pays for its own commercials and AT&T has commercials about its other products. I think Verizon will hype the hell out of a CDMA iPhone so they can steal a boatload of AT&T customers that aren't happy with AT&T in major cities.
-----------------------------------------
I am predicting (IMO) that Verizon will get the iPhone. Verizon will be unprepared for the shear amount of data usage new iPhone users are going to be requesting of the CDMA carriers network and all of the sudden AT&T won't look so bad any more. Verizon's bac...

All this sounds like more bunk. Why on Earth would VZW premier an iPhone on their CDMA network when they will begin touting 4G LTE? I believe (and feels logical) that when the iPhone comes to VZW it will be LTE.

Because its going to take them several years before they reach saturation, I don't see one tower with LTE right now in the NY Metro, or Philadelphia Metro areas, I doubt if its up anywhere else outside of test sites. Apple and for the most part many other companies upgrade their devices at least once a year. There will be no problems with a CDMA iPhone being sold, and they will sell at least 20 million of them inside a year.

Mar 30, 2010, 2:15 PM
it would actually make sense for them to launch a pre-lte version. That way they can get all the "i need an iphone" people to snap it up and then a year later release an LTE model and get the same people to snap it up again.

and a good chunk of those 20million would come from att iphone users, so it's really false churn.

I'm not denying that the iphone will sell well, and that marketing will push it. but I don't think it will be the "we have the IPHONE (and a couple other ok phones)" like it is for ATT right now. The droid marketing push is the closest VZW's gotten to that, and they still push other phones.

Well... alot depends on if Apple actually does anything exciting for the iPhone...

Because by December if it's upgraded Droid vs upgraded iPhone, with the same features on both sides? Droid (or whatever the new phone is called) will still be better, IMO.

6-9 months from now tho, your right... Apple could actually do something to get that top spot back... otherwise, it'll just be the same ignorant sheep following the masses on their quest to Think Differently.

I'm personally hoping your right, about all of it. It's gonna be one of the few fun things to watch for sure.

I have an iPhone... and can't wait to get rid of it now that there is serious competition.

Application Quality~ Have you used the apps on the app store? 300 fart apps isn't something to be proud of. Droid and Palm have comparable app stores, with fully functional apps comparable to the iPhone store.

Better web browser? Subjective to say the least... I can visit the same websites on a Droid phone, with the same look and feel.

On-Screen Keyboard? Droid, Moment, etc... all have very comparable screens, keyboards PLUS the option of a *REAL* keyboard.

User interface? Best? Seriously? It's a simplified interface that my grandma can use, for sure... but also removes *ALOT* of customization and functionality.

Do you really own an iPhone? I don't think you do.

1) Really? No offense but if you think Palm has a comparable App store you're delusional- I own AND develop for a Pre and it's downright lonely in there. Same with Android- try to find a decent IM or Twitter client for Android. They're all crap.

2) No it's not subjective. Android's browser is trash. Its javascript performance is downright impotent next to the iPhone's. Palm's is a little better but even my Pre runs into sites it can't manage (CNN.com for that matter.)

3) The on-screen keyboard on Android is near useless, and can't register simultaneous presses. (also hurting is the dumb idea to put silkscreened buttons below it.) Not to start on the inferior keyboard accuracy, but...

I own an iPhone 3GS 32GB. Got it right after they came out.

Palms (and other) app stores don't have as many apps, for sure. BUT all of the 'core' apps are there. I have a droid and a pre at work that I play with, and have no issues with either.

I've also not had issues surfing on either phone. Maybe I'll try a more diverse set of web pages to see... but I've been happy with both - and more than enthusiastic to sell either.

Copy/Paste is only a patch away. That's what iPhone users cried for the 2 years+ it took apple to implement that "easy" feature. *rolls eye*

I'd just like to point out that there are always going to clever marketing out there for both sides in big competitions. E.g.: AT&T vs. Verizon, iPhone vs. Everything else. People are TOLD that the iPhone is the fastest, best, yadda yadda yadda. I like my rooted G1 better than the iPhone I had. I'm not saying it doesn't have it's uses, but it's not this dealbreaker that people are pushing.

It can be a deal breaker for some people, but what do you think the average consumer will notice first:

1) that they can't listen to Pandora while browsing facebook and Jimmy with his android/blackberry/WINMOclassic can.
2) That sometime last tuesday they had to wait until they hung up with their mother to go find the location of the gas station.

Seriously, "talk and surf" at the same time wasn't even MENTIONED until Verizon started with their 3g coverage campaign. if it was that ground breaking of a feature, ATT (and tmo) would advertise the crap out of it as soon as they launched their 3g networks.

For the average American cell phone user talk plus surf is unnecessary. We don't have enough attention span for those two activities simultaneously, considering we are usually doing something else while we talk anyway. Surfing the web would be task number three.
Plus there's still a negative stigma surrounding anyone self important enough to carry on a conversation in public with a Bluetooth or heaven forbid on speaker, which are about the only two ways you could see your screen while talking on the phone. I think most of us still think hands free belongs in the car, and we definitely don't need to be browsing the web while talking while driving.

Name an Android handset on the market today that you think surpasses the iPhone and I'll happily explain to you why a phone with lower specs handily beats it. Android is a platform of 50 bad answers up against a platform of one good answer.

As proof- every single Android "answer" to a problem with the iPhone's platform is a problem in and of itself.

Android allows 3rd party apps to run in the background, but application performance and battery life noticeably decreases. They allow 3rd party apps to manage multiple apps- many of which interfere with vital OS functions. Oops.

They offer 4 times the pixel count of the iPhone's screen... only to display the same information density but requiring the processor to work 4 times as hard...

1.2.3. - None of which offer any benefits to the platform vs. 3rd party apps. Pathetic.

4. Still of no significance.

5. Not a Droid innovation, something it even does well, or offers support for. Call me when it does at least one of them.

6. Already done (Blackberry for sure)

7. Already done (Palm gets the credit here) though theirs was not mandatory, their refund policy allowed it.

8. RIM did it before, only without the massive privacy violations.

9. If it's fragmented than it's a moot point. You advertise Android a single platform because it still isn't. And that's not even an Android thing- WinMo stunk at it long before Android.

I love my iPhone to death, but I miss my Android for one reason and one reason only, its google sync.

I used to be able to add a calendar event on my phone and have it automatically sync with my computer, my girlfriends phone and anyone else who was linked to my calendar. I could update from my computer, my phone, my girl could add events and it all just synced.

Also, the online storage of contacts was nice.

Is there an app that does that on iPhone?
because I want that app!!!!

MobileMe does that! It's $100.00/yr . It's not free, but Apple also won't publish your contact list randomly.

1,2,3.. yes, because being able to hit a button in ANY app and transcribe or search for something is TOTALLY THE SAME THING as having to go into an app, talking what you want at it, and then copying it, going into the app you want to use it in, and pasting it. Pathetic.

4. You have no idea what you're talking about with this one. Please read up on Google talk and even better: Look up reviews by Iphone users switching to android that mention it. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM lists it as one of their favorite features.

5. Actually it does it very well. I don't use my default messaging app at all.

6. No it's not. Blackberry's navigation was a glorified Mapquest. ANdroid's navigation is a GPS system with audible turn by turn direc...

You are barking up the wrong tree. I absolutely LOVE the iphone. I had a number of posts clamoring for the iphone on Verizon. It is not about iphone hate, but rather bluecoyote and his never ending crusade against every other carrier and every other device. Who are you anyway? His big brother?

Speaking of which...

What the hell are you talking about?

As one of the few members of phone scoop with an IQ and credit score in the triple digits it's my job to set the record straight on crap.

I defend good products and bash crappy products. It's as simple as that.

Yes, because IQ and credit score are key indentifiers as to how knowledgeable someone is about technology. There's a little something called common sense that I've seen plenty of "intelligent" (in the IQ sense) people lacking.

So was it your triple digit credit score or IQ that led you to reference articles to back up your claim that say opposite what you imply.

Oh, and Credit Score goes from 350-850 (FICO), 330-830 (Experian), 501-990 (Vantagescore), which would make everyone's score above three digits, no?

And average IQ is 100 (three digits)so statistically, you're hardly the only one with a three digit IQ either.

Werner,
I happen to own an Nexus One, and I will say this, the day VZW starts selling iPhones, you will walk into one of their stores with their sales force in goofy looking polo shirts with Apple and VZW logo's on them, there will be posters and internal iPhone kiosks in the store, if you wish an android or whatever device you will have to walk past it. And I'm not even going to talk about the barrage of tv, web and other media ads starting weeks or months prior.

This is reality. Has nothing to do with what you or I like. VZW will sell at least 20 million iPhones. I even predict they will come close to or out selling first weeks sales of what AT&T has done.

I just posted this same message to Bluecoyote:

The undeniable stability and quality of Apple's product line is widely known and generally never questioned. But what market share of the world favors the alternative? Most of my colleagues as well as other people in this world, DO NOT hate Apple's products, but rather Apple itself. Steve Jobs' dictation and control to become the most powerful person in the world, is only interested in building revenue by creating a cult of followers. Why else would they purposely lock down their devices only to open a few more new items with every additional issue? Smart? Yes definitely.
But here's the problem. Apple has successfully built an iphone craze. Locked into one carrier, has kept the interest em...

But even in the PC vs Mac world, mac is gaining market share there as well.

Mac is not this evil cult that people make it seem to be. Lets not all forget all company's are out to make money. Bill Gates was doing the same thing with Microsoft, locking it down and monopolizing software. Google is flooding the market and buying up to eliminate competition.

So I say at the end of the day, just get what ever you want, but remember that none of these company's will be free and they all want money. To get the most money from a person is to be nice to that person so they will spend all their money continuously with you rather then screw them out of a large or medium size one time payment.

Sorry for the ramble.

Mar 30, 2010, 1:24 PM
Yes, every company wants money. but very FEW companies lock down their device so that commonly requested features cannot be had, only to release them bit by bit once a year (when people sign 2 year contracts) to sucker you into buying a device that is a "little" bit better, with a "few" more features.

Their upgrade path mimics that of a feature phone line (like the EnV's) more than smartphones, where every new release is an undeniable upgrade from the one the previous year.

And apple's marketshare is growing slowly, but nowhere near what it would need to overtake the other players

What the hell are you talking about? The Moto Droid came out 5 and a half months ago. Of course newer phones are going to be better overtime like the HD2. But in my opinion the Droid hold its own. Especially when the new update gets patched to all Droids which will give it all the new functions of the HD2.

I don't care about copy and paste. Heck, I'm the oddest one of all- I love AT&T but hate my iPhone. If someone had a Bold they wanted to trade I'm sure it could be worked out.

I got talked into drinking to kool aid, and I regret it. The iPhone is a good phone for some people, OK for others, and subpar for some. Same as any other phone. I found out the hard way that there are better choices for me. Sadly- it looks like many Verizon customers are going to go through the same thing.

I think your right Menno; this is basically a market driven move on both Vz and Apple; the first rule of busineds, dollars drive everything. This is just another arrow in Vz's quiver. With an Apple product they'll be in a position to not only retain their customers that would/are jumping to ATT but attract new ones. Att will need to really get their game on or else risk being an also-ran.
