Not to mention that the revenue is being made anyway...
With how quick Verizon opened up to things like Gvoice and Skype (even their limited version) I'm willing to bet that there were some strings to the agreement. (which is why I don't think ATT is on the take yet)
my one friend called it a "consolation prize" to carriers and handset makers because they had to give control back to the user.
