How is this different than any other partnership in any technology business?
You know for a FACT that either AT&T is paying Apple for exclusivity or Apple is paying AT&T not to use anything else or something along those lines.

Google is creating partnerships....

You don't think Microsoft is going to try to do the same things? You don't think Apple is/will continue to have similar practices?

InnocentEd, I agree with you completely. There's nothing wrong with paying someone to sell your product...it's called a business investment. If Google weren't worth it, then the carriers wouldn't be selling them, and customers wouldn't be buying them.

Good grief, Phonescoop, you talk like no one else has a shot if they don't have the means to barter for business. It was an entirely new mobile OS...the carriers and vendors needed some security in agreeing to launch it. It's simple economics, not evil wireless conspiracies.

I get this, there are venders @ supermarkets who pay for product placement @ end stands and so om so that their product is noticed. This is kinda like that I guess.

Exactly, this is done by Coke, Pepsi and a bunch of other companies for shelf space in supermarkets, same business model, different venue.

Not to mention that the revenue is being made anyway...

With how quick Verizon opened up to things like Gvoice and Skype (even their limited version) I'm willing to bet that there were some strings to the agreement. (which is why I don't think ATT is on the take yet)

my one friend called it a "consolation prize" to carriers and handset makers because they had to give control back to the user.

ding ding ding! We have a winner! Payola has been around since the beginning of time. That's the reason why when you turn on the radio these days, you hear nothing but crap.

It's also interesting that AT&T's Motorola Backflip Android device is crippled and from what I heard, that De...

Apple has nothing to do with it. But you can buy if you're willing to spend, Unbranded backflips, or like me, and get a Nexus One. And yeah its a more expensive option.

AT&T and Apple are in bed together and AT&T can't afford to do anything to piss Apple off right now honestly. Apple is ruthless. There can't be a better explanation unless AT&T is claiming that it's "protecting" it's users which I feel is complete and utter B.S.

Hmmm I guess it is good that people have that option to get an unlocked phone, albeit expensive but that is the beauty of WCDMA/GSM isn't it? I can't see myself getting a Wimax phone when the rest of the world will be using LTE. Wider selection of phones, unlocking...
