I almost asked "Does anybody even use Nextel anymore?" ... But I know the two dozen people who actually use these ancient Iden devices will get offended and b*tch me out. Its the truth though, iDen is a dieing network, and I can't believe Sprint hasn't phased it out yet to either the government or strictly business people who need a phone that can drop from the moon to the earth's atmosphere and penetrate it and still not break (yes I know YOU PEOPLE just love Nextel!)

Come on Sprint-LastTel, focus on the Smartphone market!

so your saying sprint should phase out all of the nextel features and drop all those customers off, because YOU think the network isnt worth it?

The Nextel network is awful, you are correct about that; but there is still no other carrier even close with their PTT services. And just because YOU don't use it, doesn't mean other people dont.

Are you saying the Nextel network was awful where YOU reside? Because Nextel worked just fine in Florida.

Who still uses iDen? How about Disney World, Proctor & Gamble, and countless contruction companies and first responders? Where I work, we recently switched FROM Verizon to Nextel due to the crappy in building reception and call quality. Nextel is built for the working man, not teeny boppers who play with their phones all day.

Nextel is a big reason as to why Sprint was bleeding customers. I don't think they should drop the network for that reason alone, but you guys listed a lot of corporate clients. If that is all that's left, is it really wise or even financially smart to maintain a network that isn't growing? Wouldn't it better serve Sprint to sell the network off and use that money to pay down debt? I definitely Nextel has some good stuff, but if your consumer base is going elsewhere, you should follow them

But, I don't know the numbers behind it. It may be more cost efficient to keep Nextel and those corporate clients.

re: "Nextel is a big reason as to why Sprint was bleeding customers."

You got that entirely backwards. Sprint is the reason Nextel is bleeding customers.

If this thread was dated a year after the merger I would agree with you but in 2010 not so much.

Yes. When the 9-11 attacks knocked out the PSTN (public switched telephone network, i.e. regular landline system), all of the cellular carriers in Manhattan lost signal. They lost signal because in the vast majority of cellular calls, the PSTN is what is used to route cellular calls from one tower to another, and that main link was knocked out. So even if a given cellular tower was still operational, the main-line links to carry those calls to the towers or the landline phones on the other end were down.

The reason Nextel's Direct Connect PTT still worked during and after the 9-11 attacks is that it is a different animal. Nextel PTT is a genuine radio-dispatch type system, separate from the cellular voice system, and it runs in parallel a...

All those teeny boppers on Boost just gave you a collective raspberry.

"iDen is a dieing network, and I can't believe Sprint hasn't phased it out yet to either the government or strictly business people"

... funny, because all of you quoted how well Nextel works with large corporate companies. MY POINT EXACTLY. Read my thread for Christ's sake. Iden is a useless network for the everyday Joe, but obviously not for these types. So my point was phase it out and let it serve these types of people, and get regular citizens to move over to the CDMA network. As a previous poster said, Nextel is bleeding customers anyways, and its hurting Sprint.

I used Nextel for many years. PTT was a cool fad for a while, but people started leaning towards BETTER voice service and coverage, text messaging, and mobile internet...
