Sprint needs to stop badmouthing their flagship phone
WebOS is the best thing Sprint's got going for it. They need to stop pitching the also-ran HTC Hero and stop talking crap about the Pre. Buying one should not incite warnings from Sprint salespeople. I've had mine for 4 months and I love it.
Sprint, Palm did you the favor of giving you your first competitive smartphone in half a decade. Verizon got stuck with Android, and blew millions marketing a device that can't even run the most recent OS version yet.

I don't fault reps for giving an honest opinion. I personally have a hero, and use a live pre for demo purposes at work, so i know both very well. I've also sold a number of both phones, and I've seen pre customers return their phone or come in for issues more than any other smartphone I've ever dealt with. Meanwhile, I've had no complaints or returns on the Hero.
It's not like salespeople make more on one phone vs the other, they're giving an experience based opinion. Honesty is not a bad thing in sales.

I don't know how someone in good conscience could recommend an HTC phone- let's be honest, even by Sprint standards HTC is your least reliable manufacturer aside from Audiovox (who was at the time selling HTC smartphones.)

2.1 is largely a cosmetic update. You have yet to give 1 reason why it is a critical update.
-Multitouch browser, Dolphin and xscope do this, better than the native browser at multitouch imo.
-Google Earth. Capable of running on 2.01, market for some reason blocking it. You can side load it without rooting easily.
-2.1 Keyboard. Ported, does not require rooting (though it works best with it)
-News and Weather Widget: Ported, no rooting required.
-Gallery. Ported, no rooting required
So that leaves... what? Live wallpapers? the new launcher (which most likely won't make it to the droid because it cannot handle a physical keyboard well (yet))

void your warranty.
Simple as that.

Sideloading apps does NOT void your warranty. Those solutions don't require rooting (Which does voice the warranty)

must be removed for support.

it doesn't void your warranty, which is completely different from "must be removed for support." You can't change the tune once you sing it.
