My Moto Q9 strangely uses anywhere from 50 to 100 kilobytes of data every month that Verizon charges me .015 for each KB. I never open the browser and yet this still happens. I've called Verizon and they say they have no idea why this happens, if I am in fact not using the browser, or that maybe my phone does that because it's trying to find signal?! 😳 And if I turn data off, no more pics and videos can be sent or received. Can't do that.

I don't blame the operators, but somebody in that company knows whats going on, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a scheme to bilk some loose change out of people, which would add up to A LOT multiplied by millions of customers. Or perhaps certain devices accidentally do this and Verizon knows,...

uhhh... your whole complaint is why data is required on a smart phone...

if you don't wanna pay the data then get a reqular phone... you can actually do more with it (like sending mms)

Why is it required? Because Verizon says so? I can still send and receive MMS without a data plan. I don't need data and shouldn't be forced to get it. If a customer calls Verizon and they can't tell me why my phone mysteriously accumulates data charges for no reason, then something is very seriously wrong.

I think now I will be calling at the end of every billing cycle (which today is the last day) and demand I be credited back the false data charges. I'll post back.

smartphones without data will accumulate small data use when a picture or video sends/receives... im no network tech but if you search around the previous forums hard enough there is a better explanation of it somewhere...

this data occurance doesn't occur with regular phones... thus makes this argument invalid to the point of the lawsuit

It's required because as you see, your phone uses data even if you dont.

Making profit off of something a customer doesn't use is what I call artificial profit.

And that's not relevant.

His phone (the Motorola Q) uses data no matter what. It is old enough that Data is optional, which is why he is getting the charges. He can block the charges, but only if he blocks picture messaging, which he doesn't want to do.

It's the nature of his phone. Verizon shouldn't just "give him that data for free." because he says he doesn't want it. His phone is using the data, he's refusing to block that usage, he pays for it.

Here Here. I'm no VZW fan but I think that people all to often are saying "I have no option" when in fact they do, the just don't like their options. Suck it up and quit whining

The data charges are for the MMS , smartphones send MMS Differetly than a standard phone, thus the data charges they connect to the web to send them. Im not a tech so I dont know why they do and a standard phone doesnt. But ive run into it in the past

You probably have the phone set to automatically check for updates (its a default setting on the Q series. If you dont go into the phone and turn something off, the phone will do data transfers on its own on a regular basis.

Motorola fully supports all of the phones they make, go to the moto site and search their support forums, if you dont find the answer post the question and someone will let you know what to turn off on the phone to stop those data transfers.

Your data charges are for pix/vids. MMS on a smartphone without a plan still uses data and the charge is valid. You should either switch to a GIN phone or add a data plan to avoid these charges.

If a customer is being charged for MMS on a smartphone as KB use, there is a billing error happening.MMS messages should never be counting towards data use for a line, regardless of the type of device. "should" being the keyword, as there have been multiple billing issues over the years where they have gotten counted incorrectly as MB or KB use.

I agree, why purchase a smartphone at a higher price point with all the added features and then complain that you have to put a data plan on it. Why have it in the first place? They are simple flips with good mp cameras and no data package required full keyboard phones. So please answer, why would you want a pda style smartphone if you weren't going to use data features.
