I'm guessing that maps is seen as an application, where the Browser is a core process. Apps can be updated through the store, core processes need OTA

The mail application needs multi-touch as well as the ability to move mail to folders, and support for a signature file.

The HTC has this.

Still this is a good start, I am using K9 mail now which works great with the exception of multi-touch zoom.

Very cool if that's real...though it doesn't have a release date on it.

Something I've always wondered about device updates is if a smartphone is sitting in a box in a store and someone buys a Droid after the updates are pushed OTA how would someone go about updating their device to take advantage of the latest functionality if it was sitting in a box at the time of the last software update.

then you just go to (as far as the droid goes) settings, about phone, then select System update and it will then search for the newest update. Blackberry's get updated via their Desktop Manager software.

As far as Verizon is concerned, Droid phones will recieve the latest update as soon as the phone has been activated regardless of how long it was sitting in the box prior to the release of the udate.

as soon as my Eris was activated, I had a pop-up that a software update was required. Took a few minutes but it worked and it's the latest options.

Thanks for the info, I'm in the learning process with Android, and am eagerly looking forward to finding out what HTC Android smartphones ATT ends up getting.

Its automatic. As long as you have the stock Android OS (RC29,RC33,1.5,1.6,2.0,2.1) you will receive an update when you have the phone on for awhile receiving data. If you rooted the phone with a different OS or Mod, you will not receive the updates anymore.

By "stock Android" do you mean that if I havd an Android smartphone that has HTC's SenseUI, and it has a slightly older version of Android, that it won't be able to automatically update to a newer version?

If that is the case, then I think I will forgo SenseUI, and make sure I just get a stock Android smartphone. It seems as though updating is a whole, whole lot more simpler that way.

no, stock means you have a version of the software that shipped (or updated) directly from manufacturer.

When you root a phone you can install custom roms (such as one that enables wifi tethering, or gives you more homescreens, whatever) Doing this typically disables OTA because if your phone is rooted and you update it OTA you loose Root, so a lot of the more advanced apps won't work.

I thought of something, Rogers in Canada is getting the Motorola Milestone, AKA Droid, and Rogers uses the same 3G bands as ATT, and so I wondered to myself if there is any remote chance that ATT will pick up the Motorola Milestone (ATT will likely call it something else).

Wouldn't that be interesting if I eneded up getting the same Android smartphone as you. I asked myself if I would be satisfied with the Milestone/Droid's specs, and I thought well, if ATT's version has 2.1.

Just remember, you can overclock the phone to 800mhz safely, and even at stock, the Nexus One wasn't blowing the Droid out of the water.

I just downloaded a lot of the 2.1 updates (but not 2.1 yet.. no stable rom out) I'm really excited so see where this will go..

In the meantime I continue to grapple with myself between continuing to hustle down my credit card ever closer to $0, and taking the Android plunge.

I really want to get this over with and give myself a fresh start in life.
