Finding a buyer in the U.S. market will be difficult, as an acquisition by AT&T would likely run into regulatory hurdles

Actually AT&T is probably the only one with the money to buy them right now. As well as logistically its a match. Now saying all that, better off for all, if they stay independent.

I think Tmo has had a really good influence on the industry the past 2yrs or so. It's because of Tmo that ATT has A-List and Vzn/Alltel has F&F. If Tmo never had MyFav, none of those other unlimited plans would exist.

Alltel had My Circle before T-Mobile had My Favs AND My Circle was better. So I would say that it is because Verizon acquired Alltel and chose to keep and re-brand My Circle that AT&T has A-List. They didn't care what T-Mobile was doing. When Verizon started then they had to copy it.

They should run into regulatory issues. The deal would be bad for consumers and decrease competition. Plus, it would make no sense for ATT to purchase TMobile b/c it would have to probably divest most of their purchase just to get the FCC's blessing. As for VZ wiping the mat with ATT? Where did you get your numbers b/c other than a few cute commercials, the numbers don't add up. ATT has been performing excellently. This is probably a good time for maybe Vodafone to come to the US market. They could use the proceeds from the sale of their VZ Wireless assets to purchase TMobile. There has been pressure on Vodafone to make a sale and VZ definitely wants 100% ownership in their best performing division.

Vodaphone made a bid for ATTWS. No one knows if it was a serious bid or just a ploy to drive up the price of the acquisition. With the recent news that Vodaphone has seen no dividends from Verizon Wireless despite owning forty-five percent of the company, I would not blame them for wanting to get out of that deal and into one where they are the driving force behind the company's direction and beneficiary of its success.

From what I've read at stock sites.. Verizon Wireless should start paying dividends this year (they were using it to pay back internal debt up to this point or something)

Plus I'm sure that Verizon would raise a big stink if Vodaphone tried entering on their own so soon.

Yes, but I'm sure Verizon would be more then happy to buy out Voda's holdings in VZW. Its not secret they want VZW, lock stock and barrel.

This would allow Voda to buy TMO-US, especially with the bucks they got for their 45% (or whatever).

"Hound" is a bit harsh. They've been having this Android discussion off and on for a while now. Jay seeks Menno's advice on Android related issues (as he wants to take the Android plunge once AT&T gets an Android phone) and Menno offers sage advice. He doesn't seem to mind giving his opinion on the subject. Sorry that it bothers you more than Menno.

It didn't stop Vodaphone from bidding on ATTWS. Had Vodaphone won (no way Cingular was going to be outbid, but let's play with it for a moment) THEN they would have been forced to sell their stake in VZW. I would do it if I were Vodaphone.

I think it's amazing that Vzn bought Alltel and yet ATT is only 6m customers behind Vzn, not bad at all. But I don't think it is good for competion that 2 companies in the U.S. have more than half the entire market, that is way, way too much domination for only 2 companies.

But in the next 2yrs there will definetly be a lot of data wars going on. With LTE being deployed by Vzn, MetroPCS, and WiMAX being deployed by Clear/Sprint, plus Tmo deploying HSPA+. There will be a whole lot of competing going on with data. So that kind of competition is definetly a good thing.

In satellite TV market, there are only 2 service providers: Dish Network and DirecTV. Satellite radio market had XM and Sirius but they merged and became SiriusXM (Are you sirius? 😁 πŸ˜›)

AT&T should be allowed to either merge with T-Mobile or buy out their network.

Exactly. If you look back Verizon currently is a combination of past companies such as Bell Atlantic, Airtouch, parts of CellularOne, parts of GTE MobileNet, Primus, parts of Dobson, and others. AT&T is Cingular, AT&T Wireless, parts of Dobson, parts of Cellular One, and others.

It's a matter of larger eating up smaller to become even larger. It just seems that everyone only remembers the most recent and forgets the past.

SMCGARVEY6, you really need to consider what your saying before you type it out. Luckily dmjr2000 said it about right. The Tmob Towers will not just disappear. Infact the huge benefit you will recieve from a merger like AT&T would be an increased signal in other areas, and if it was AT&T that merged with TMob, you would then have 120million customers that you would be able to call for free instead of like 40million as of current.

By that logic there never would have been a Verizon or AT&T in their current incarnations. We would still have Prime Co., Ameritech, Pac Bell Wireless, GTE, Bell Atlantic Mobility, Airtouch, Southwestern Bell Wireless, Bell South Wireless and on and on. They didn't stop this merger business then. I remember working at ATTWS they bragged about being the largest independent wireless company (having the AT&T name but no affiliation with AT&T)...then they were on the auction block.

Once that acquisition was allowed under the previous regime then they could hardly block the Nextel acquisition although they SHOULD have blocked the Alltel one simply because Verizon was supposed to wait ten years to acquire the old GTE unit as a condition of...

Having less competition can actually be a beneficial for consumers. When companies like ATT and Verizon take over smaller companies, they are removing the threat of lower prices in those other companies markets. Less competition means that there is less incentive to create an innovative and useful product, as the consumer does not have a large amount of choices anyways. I would assume that as time goes on and wireless companies become more consolidated, the amount of jobs in the industry would shrink. Imagine if sprint went, t-mobile got bought, and we only had verizon and att. Well if they both have bad customer service, and high prices, guess you're just out of luck my friend.

While it is feasible.. AT&T wouldn't gain anything outside of AWS/PCS spectrum.

- T-Mobile is in the SAME markets (or less) than AT&T
- AT&T runs GSM on 850/1900 and 3G on 850/1900 and has some AWS and some good areas for 700MHz. T-Mobile is GSM 1900 / 3G on AWS. Not a good mix for 3G - no 850/1700/1900 3G handsets.

If you read the article (I am not saying you did not) you will see that t-mobile/DT is tryign to raise bank funds to spin t-mobile off to buy regional carriers in the US as a merger to make them larger, therefore more profitable on their own.
