I didn't get my first cellphone until March 2002, and that was with Verizon Wireless. I remember all the cellphone companies that originated in the Chicago market in the late 90's to today.
Ameritech Cellular (B Side) - acquired by GTE in 1999 after SBC was forced to divest the wireless side when they acquired Ameritech (I miss Ameritech as they were the better phone company. Never tried the wireless service) Eventually Bell Atlantic acquired GTE to form Verizon Wireless. (CDMA service)
