If ATT -tested- their network like Verizon does these sorts of problems could've been fixed a long t

On a sidenote, surd would be nice if ATT added ethernet to cell towers here in Las Vegas.

Just an over all more aggressive company with it's network would be be nice.

I wasn't aware of any network difficulties in Vegas, Jay. Consider this...a guy has congestive heart failure and someone notices he has a mole on his back. Which operation should he have first? The triple bypass or the removal of the mole?

Triple bypass most definetly.
I never said Vegas should have came before NYC/SF. Just in addition to. Also, for the most part ATT 3G isn't too bad here.

But hey, if adding ethernet to cell sites adds more bandwidth and better backhaul then yippy, do it nationally.

I wonder what other cities besides Vegas, San Fran and NY, "...are performing under what it (ATT) calls its performance objective."

Let's clear up some misconceptions here...

1) AT&T handles something like 80-90% of ALL mobile data on their networks, way more than Verizon Wireless. On top of that, something like 80% of all mobile traffic on the internet originating from the USA comes from AT&T's network. If AT&T's smartphone roster was the Blackberry Storm and Droid you'd better believe nobody would be complaining about dropped calls and network congestion...

2) Mind you AT&T did major network upgrades before both iPhone launches to cope with capacity. They mis-underestimated the popularity of the iPhone 3G and its usage.

I'm not sure I really care about the numbers. As I'm sure is the case with most ATT customers. Excuses don't fix the issues. It's nice the iphone is so popular and all, but verizon spends more money on their network and so it functions better.

So Verizon is the only carrier that drive tests their network? Then why are data speeds so poor in the Portland, OR market? or why do phones go to "extended network" in Downtown Seattle. If it is like this here in the Northwest which is one of their best regions then what is it like in regions where they are not so strong?

Every carrier drive tests their network. When I worked for a regional carrier the engineers were able to not only monitor their own network performance but all of the competitors as well.

Is the VZW Kool-Aid Red?

I'm actually an ATT customer. I just didn't think anyone other than Vzn tested their network is all.

AT&T tests their network. Back when the iPhone launched they did some serious overhauls to their EDGE network to meet demand. (Search for ATT articles back in June of 2007) Then the iPhone 3G came out and they were expecting what I suspect was similar usage patterns.... only what they got was an explosion of data thanks to the one-two hit of the faster connection and app store.

Back when I had an iPhone I kept WiFi on... on my 3G I just keep it on 3G all the time because AT&T's network is pretty damn fast- for awhile it was faster than my home DSL connection. Now picture the millions of iPhone users on AT&T's network doing the same thing and you get the picture.

It's easy to slam AT&T for their network woes but if the iPhone had lau...

The iPhone on Verizon, T-Mobile or Sprint might not be a good thing. AT&T has more bandwidth than these carriers for 3G so if it is affecting a wide bandwidth network of 70mhz to 90mhz what wwould happen if these same types of usage were on a 30mhz to 50 mhz network?
