What are you talking about. 32 gig iphone costs 699 with no subsidy and 32 gig ipad costs 729 with no subsidy.

Do you honestly think that this device costs more then 130 bucks to make more then the iphone? Absolutely no way.

Sign a 2 year contract with AT&T and the price drops to 299.

Subsidy makes sense.

I think my point sailed soundly over your head

if a tiny 32gb iphone is 699 and the giant 32gb ipad is only 30 dollars more you dont find that odd? you dont think possibly the outright prices of phones are inflated to convince consumers to sign contracts?

seriously if they can sell this device unlocked and with no contract for this price and make money at the point of sale then the phone prices are very much inflated

I agree w/u! One has a 3.5in screen, and one has a 9.7in screen, 6in difference and only $30 more.

Retail prices for smartphones are definetly inflated.

not to mention this thing has a computer built in with a 1ghz processor

how can anyone in this industry look a customer in the face and say the phones actually cost us that much we are giving you a discount for signing a contract

In most cases with electronics it is cheaper to make something bigger than to make it smaller.

Also this is not a phone, rather it is a web surfing devise. It does not have a camera, it does not have GPS, it has a tiny amount of memory for a devise of its size. It cannot multi task, and does not run Mac OSx so it is not a real computer.

There is nothing smart about this devise, so please do not compareit to a smart phone when talking about the cost, because my Droid does so much more.

1) It runs OSX, as does the iPhone and iPod Touch actually. The top layer interface isn't the same (duh) , but that's because that approach makes no sense and doesn't perform well in the market (see how many Windows tablets people ask for...)

2) Every single application demoed today was more powerful than anything your Droid can run. Especially the web browser.

There are things it cannot do that the Droid or many smartphones can do. Just as you say there are things it can do that the Droid and other smartphones can. That really is the point.

The main point is that just because something "can" do it doesn't mean it does it *well.*
