Not sure I understand the hype??
So you're paying 600, 700 or 800 dollars for a somewhat dumbed down version of a notebook computer. Yeah, the $30/month is nice, but that's a carrier decision. And you're subsidizing it with the upfront cost. So... why would I buy this?

they are not subsidizing the upfront price

What I meant was that the high cost of the device, compared with a comparable netbook, offsets the relatively low monthly data charge.

depends how long you use it

At least a year to break even the way I figure it. Of course by then, something better will have come along. In the meantime, maybe they will have added Flash and multi-tasking capability (like any laptiop/notebook) but I doubt it.

Well it starts at $500.00 , what you're getting is a device that's "instant-on" and is likely faster on the web than anything in the price range, with 10 hours of battery life, and can handle HD video.
You can buy a $300.00 netbook that technically does more- I've got one myself.
The big difference is you're working with an interface designed for the 10 inch screen, as opposed to a netbook where you're working with Windows 7 or god help you, Ubuntu.
I'd have to use one, but if you look at the quality of applications it can run they appear to be of substantial quality.
