The AT&T Mirror Dance

Verizon introduces Unlimited Calling. ATT mirrors it the very next day. Verizon introduces Friends and Family Calling. ATT mirrors that later on with their "A List" Calling. Verizon lowers cost of their Unlimited Calling Plan. ATT Follows suit within hours of the Verizon change. And now this- Free Calls to Haiti to help during their emergency. Hmm.... now it will be interesting to see how long before ATT mirrors this one. 👀

Companies staying competitive with each other isn't something new at all... Verizon got their friends and family after Alltel. Hell, I think T-Mobile had it before Verizon too. Nextel had unlimited calling for $99 before Verizon did. AT&T just doesn't want to be the first to lower prices if they don't have to...

Alltel started it in 2005 or 2006. T-Mobile started it in 2007 or 2008.

AT&T needs all the money they can get because there network is so poor right now

AT&T's network is fine. It's just inundated with iPhone users in a very concentrated area. Kind of like 500 people using one wifi hotspot. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the hotspot, just too many people on it. Transplant all those folks on another network and you got the same problem...concentrated users with limited bandwidth. Try using your network at a football game or at fireworks...

So is the network fine? Or is it bogged down by Iphone users. Thats kind of a contradictory statement there. If it was fine then it wouldnt be "inundatedd with Iphone users in a very concentrated area". That means their network is lagging in that area.

No the problem with AT&T isn't so much the iPhone users, they are only PART of the problem. AT&T is just to stubborn to build their network out. Look at their 3G footprint for example. If they would upgrade their current towers and build new ones in weak areas, there wouldn't be such a major problem.

Another fact is GSM can't handle as much call capacity as CDMA. CDMA has a broader spectrum allowing more users to use the network. CDMA is also higher quality. Makes me wonder why GSM is so popular with the world...it sucks!

You are right about CDMA. I recently traveled to Houston to attend a U2 concert with 60k plus people in the stadium. My friends with att and T-Mobile could not use their phones at all, no calls or text while Sprint and Verizon had no problems. I stopped by a Radio Shack near the stadium the next day so my friend could purchase a charger and the salesman said att/T-mobile users living nearby can't use their phones anytime there is an NFL game or well attended event there. Here in Austin, same thing happens when UT has a home game. Half of downtown can't make calls on the gsm carriers.

okay you verizon reps and fanboys need to leave phone scoop before I make it happen. All you do is trash anyone/thing that's not verizon. Verizon is having data issues in heavy concentrated data areas....

second of all verizon ripped off may favs from tmo who took it from alltell. The way the unlimited plans are set up are taken from tmo not sprint/nextel. And at&t was smart to wait for verizon because there's no point in losing money if they don't have to.

also to the verizon fanboy, how about your company lying saying if you cancel early on the 23rd money they loose money?. Blackberry curve 8330 on the bobo. 100 then 100 rebate. Phone costs verizon around 300(322). MOST PEOPLE DO NOT RECEIVE THEIR REBATE). 2 in 5 do. So verizon loose...

To answer this childish question, no. I am a store manager of a local cell phone retailer that sells; Sprint, Verizon, At&t, and T-mobile. We also sell boost mobile, virgin mobile, net 10, tracfone, at&t go phones, and t-mobile prepaid.

Being a retailer that sells all but Cricket, I have a good understanding how all of the companies are doing, their customer support, pricing, future investments, expansions etc, Sorry that you do not know this.

I am also sick of the Verizon Rep's that post here(VWX_XXXXX) is a hint, trashing other companies using false information and slander to make themselves look better. Verizon Wireless is a great company. It dominated the market til about 3-5 years ago. Now everyone caught up and is surpasing ...

Fios is not offered by Verizon Wireless, it is offered by Verizon Communications which is ONE of VZW's parent companies (55% stakeholder). To blame customer service issues you have experienced with VZ Communications on VZW is unfair and unreasonable.

How can Verizon rip off Friends and Family when they bought Alltel who as you say started it all? They acquired Alltel and all the Alltel customers were nervous about whether they would be allowed to keep their MyCircle plans and threatened to leave if not. Then you had legacy VZW customers clamoring that they should be able to sign up for MyCircle plans to or they would leave. It all worked out I guess.

What exactly does this have to do with my post? I simply stated that the guy before me was contradicting himself in saying that AT&T's network is fine & bogged down by iphone users.

That wasn't my point. It's almost amusing to see how closely AT&T (and specifically AT&T), stays to the script. Verizon does something and ATT follows closely behind. And, you're right. It's to stay competitive. However, in a long list of moves from ATT that mimic Verizon's, this is one that would be nice to see from them. I'm just wondering if anyone will notice if they don't follow suit to help the efforts in Haiti.

The point is that AT&T never cared about MyFavs or My Circle until Verizon re-branded My Circle as Friends and Family. AT&T and VZW react to what the other does NOT to anything the other carriers do.

All AT&T is doing is once customers receive their bill, they may call AT&T to receive a bill credit for up to 60 minutes of calls.

Your exactly right Waldorfsalad! Some colleagues of mine were joking around with some AT&T competitors about how they always follow suit within hours of a major wireless change by Verizon. Even they agreed its annoying and embarrassing.

It goes to show who leads the industry in America and who follows.

Exactly. Verizon Wireless' actions are proactive, whereas AT&T's actions are simply reactive. While Sprint cuts costs in a sneaky fashion (by limiting roaming, for example), Verizon Wireless ensures that changes to its pricing structure doesn't negatively affect revenue (especially given how much is put into its network each year). With AT&T, I'd have to think that its revenue is being put to far less constructive use, because AT&T can simply match what Verizon Wireless does with little thought or consideration put into it.
