besides the tethering is from an unsupported app (sprint no longer supports phone as modem plans)

Who cares is Sprint supports the app or the usage, I have Joikuspot on my Nokia N95 that I use to turn my phone into a wifi hotspot, do I care what ATT thinks? NO!!! MY plan is unlimited, enough said.

it lists in your ToS that you can't use it for tethering so if they wanted they could cut you off (and even bill for estimated data usage) I'm not saying they will, but you can't use that to show the superiority of your ATT plan just like an iphone user can't claim that it's great for multi-tasking even though it is if you jailbreak it.

First of all I don't care about ToS. You know that. There is a whole lot of things in the wireless industry that they don't need to know!!!

Cable companies don't ask their customers what kind of tv they are using, LCD, plasma, DLP, or something that is 10yrs old.

Wireless phone companies don't need to know what phone I'm using. I have a phone that is unlocked/unbranded, and is appearently too good for ATT to offer.

All wireless companies need to worry about is my bill paid? Is my phone recieving a signal. Cause as far as I'm concerned that what they are there for, to provide a cellular signal.

I'm very different than most consumers I guess.

Thanks! 😁

Nice to come across a fellow consumer on Phone Scoop, so many on here are employees and fanboys!

Cable companies don't know what kind of tv people have in their homes, nor do wireless companies need to know what kind of phone I have.

cable companies do want to know how many TV's you have hooked up to your connection,or if you are splicing your internet for free channels.

Gosh Menno, your always defending greedy companies! Which are you? A consumer? Or a brainwashed defender of corporations? Which is it?

Phone Scoop is a website, not a boardroom!

That's not fair. Just because someone tells you the legal thing does not mean they are defending corporations. If I saw you smoking a joint and told you "You know if the cops catch you, you are going to jail for possession." I am not defending anyone. I am just stating a fact. You are a grown man, but if you DO get caught one day, you cannot say you were not warned.

Uh huh, but again, how is a cable company going to know if a coax cable is hooked up to multiple tvs? They aren't going to break into someone's private residence.

Its a moot point, because using digital cable, hd or regular, you have to have a box.

Now that the analong tv shut off has long passed, I wish cable companies would move HD channels down in the channel linup. I don't know what cable company you have where your at, but here In Las Vegas theres Cox, and all the HD channels at up in the 700s. And thus like you said require an HD DVR, because they are in the upper channels.

I never worked for a cable company so I have no idea. I have worked for many wireless companies and I know they can monitor data usage (which is where this started). As long as you are getting over....more power to you. I'm just saying that it is uncool to attack someone for telling you what is legal. I'm not going to say "right" because I think the TOS is garbage, personally. If VZW ever sends ME a bill for streaming audio on my grandfathered unlimited plan, I won't be surprised because I know the rules but I won't pay either.

I was told that the billing system is setup is in such a way that dat usage can only be detected on aircards, 5gigs and access stops. But with unlimited phone plans, the system isn't setup to stop access like it is with aircards,...so that's what I was told. And I have gone over 5gigs numerous times on my Nokia N95.

It depends on how they have their switch set up. But if you are using a great amount of data on a phone it might look suspicious.

Well, I haven't been using it to watch any Hulu, just news clips, and of course porn, can't go without that, and regular non-multimedia websites. I'm currently up to 5.22gigs. And my billing cycle ends Monday.

Of course, since they are used to iphone customers tearing it up over there they probably do not see anything unusual. At VZW someone without a tethering plan using Tether(formerly Tetgerberry) or PDA Net or whatever is going to stick out like a sore thumb and at a minimum have their thorough put slowed.

Dude, you need to calm down. The "if you don't agree with me you're a fanboy/employee shtick is getting a little old.

I am saying that your analogy is flawed. Because while you, or even I might say that once I buy something, it's mine to do as I please, doesn't mean that this somehow makes it reality. At the moment, tethering your phone is a violation of the contract, and it doesn't become legal just because you don't care about it.

I believe that data is data, and it shouldn't matter how it is used, however no company currently shares this opinion with me (at least that I can find) so I can't give them my business.

I also believe that by following the rules I've agreed to, my argument AGAINST those rules is made stronger because...

Well, with reguards to this violation of contract stuff, I haven't been under contract for over 4yrs.

**But that *might* change sometime in the next 6 months or so, when ATT starts to carry Android devices, hopefully one that is similar to the Nexus One's specs WITH a slideout keyboard, another words, like your Droid but with a snapdragon processor.

you still have an agreement with them though. you can't just say "I did it your way for two years, now I can do whatever I wants"

I think that more consumers need to inform themselves about the company and the markets that they pay for. An educated consumer is more dangerous than a spiteful one.

I wish i knew his cell number so I could bill his ass for it, the send him to collections and watch as he gets dragged to court for not wanting to pay several thousand dollars he owes for improper use of AT&T's network... then go to court over exploiting AT&T

I agree with you, you own the device but at&t owns the network

all three came about because people decided to try and stick it to the system enough times that instead of opening up to try and regain customers, they closed off to cut off those loopholes.

Well good to know what kind of person you are! What you said is the equivalent to saying I don't care what the laws are as long as the police don't know I'm breaking them.It is you and the ignorant people like you that makes companies like At&t put limits on what can and cant be done. Now they want to limit there unlimited plans because there are people like you doing exactly what they ask you not to do. It is actually scary reading what some of you write. If the logic you used to justify what is essentially stealing is the same logic you use for everything else no wonder this country is were it is!

Just out of curiosity, how much data did you average while tethering your phone? I just got that same app on my phone and I do worry about about that 5GB cap.
...
Jayshmay

Jan 16, 2010, 12:38 PM
It's hard to say what I've averaged, but I've used as high as 9gigs before in a billing cycle. The plan IS unlimited. The 5gig cap only applies to aircards.

As far as I'm concerned tethering is none of the carriers business.

Thanks for the info, Jay. With the wireless tethering, I can cancel my home internet and just use my phone instead. I do download music, but it is legal downloading as I don't believe in torrents. I think I can average 5 GB a month.
