Make fun, but did you know that Nextel is the ONLY phone that worked in NYC the day of the 911 attacks? IDEN will always be around, especially for the government agencies and military who use them regularly. Because they're dependable. As a matter of fact, Nextel was even giving out free phones with service to Red Cross and other organizations during the 911 attacks to help families locate their missing loved ones. I'm just as big of a friend as the next high tech junkie, but youtube and android want save your butt in an emergency.

Lmao... chill out man. Christ, I have never seen someone with such a giant hard on for Nextel and IDEN.

With its horrible calling network, and its phones ...

If you hated Nextel so much, why did you decide to stay with them through not one contract, not two, but well into the third? They must have been doing something right!

As for the IDEN network- no it isn't perfect. But with the way it is today, it isn't really intended for the average Joe to be using it anyway. Companies that need direct connect and hard use customers like fire, police, and military are the central focus. They find that the IDEN network and rugged phones are by far the best option.

Am I going to go get an IDEN phone? Not unless I find myself back in the Marine Corps. As long as I'm not wearing green every day I'll be fine with AT&T. But then, the chances of me being stuck in a driving rain storm or a sandstorm aren't ...

Yes, they did d o something right pal, they gave me a 20% government employee discount... something that none of the other carriers offered at the time. Also, I used PTT with all my family members and a few co-workers, but it turned out to be a fad. texting is today's PTT, and texting is more useful in my opinion.

Boy, never knew there were so many Nextel fanboys on Phonescoop!

and FYI, Sprint honored that 20% discount when I told them I wanted to migrate over.

Of course they did, because it is the same company. And it sounds like you're better off on the Sprint network. However, that isn't the case for everyone. PTT is a neat feature, if you know someone on the same network that has it. It is a useful feature when you run a business and have all of your employees using it. It is great for first responders to be able to communicate with one another when their radios will not do so.

Is it for everyone? Nope. Heck, it isn't for me. (If I was a fanboy I'd probably have a Nextel phone, and I don't.) But it is a useful feature for those that need it. No, you don't get 3g speeds, but then I don't get 3g where I live anyway. I'm not even red on Verizon's map. You know, it really isn't that bad.

Following up on TMOguy32's original post in this thread:

Not only did Nextel save the days immediately following 9-11, not only did they donate phones to public agencies & disaster organizations, not only is former NYC mayor Guiliani's NEXTEL phone in the Smithsonian, you forgot that Nextel ALSO lent their PTT phones to Verizon and ATT & other competitors so that their network techs could communicate enough to get their own wireless networks going again. Without NEXTEL loaning their iDEN PTT phones to VZ & ATT, those guys' networks would have been down for days, maybe weeks longer than they were after the 9-11 attacks.

So you few Nextel bashers on here, just remember THAT while you're sitting in in your tubs full of bubble bath, watchi...
