What's the point of releasing the world's first 4G network if you're not going to release handsets for it until close to 2011...right about when LTE will already be launched with Verizon, which will also have handsets to work for it. I understand the whole aircard/modem thing, but COME ON!

Has Verizon announced they will have LTE phones in 2010? I think their plan is to go the aircard route at first.

I will never understand the mentality that wants to see one fail. I hope that both Wi-Max AND LTE are successful. It will be a win for consumers.

Who said anything about wanting anyone to fail? The OP made it sound like Sprint & Clear were dropping the ball by not pushing out handsets faster. I merely asked if Verizon was planning on having handsets out this year, since everything I've read indicates they would be releasing aircards first.

In my opinion, for Sprint/Clear to succeed they need to maintain their lead in deploying the technology for as long as they can. After all, they are deploying a technology different from most of the rest of the world. That probably won't affect their current customer base, but it really won't enable them to grow much, either. They'll never capture the international business market, for example.

Definitely not hating on Sprint. I want the company to succeed even though I question some of the things they do.

Here's the deal, they started saying, "We are going you the first 4G network. AT&T and Verizon customers, you will have to wait years for something we will have in a few months." Although I think they should have gone with the new standard, I thought, sweet...Sprint is going to roll theirs out and possibly force the other carriers to adapt if it pans out well. If that were the case, they'd have the largest 4G network until Verizon and AT&T jumped on the bandwagon.

But that sinks to nothing if phones for WiMAX won't be available until the end of this year. Why? Verizon is about to start opening up LTE this year. AT&T has go...

Clear is up to 30 markets now,...how can 30 markets be "test markets" Isn't that what Baltimor was a long, long time ago?

Someewhere around 600k. As of Clear's 4th qtr report. I'm sure that'll be around 3m+ by the end of the year (just a guess).

They are going to have to have more markets before even a Wimax phone is really going to make much of a difference, until its more wow factor then of anything important.

...but Sprint's Wi-Max launched forced Verizon to get the ball rolling on LTE. Without it who knows how long they would have waited.

I still believe there is room for Wi-Max and LTE and want both to thrive so that the carriers can continue to push one another toward further technological advances.

No matter what carrier has 4G, this technology is going to take wireless to a whole new level. With this inception, there is going to be issues at first. I would prefer a slow intialization rather than plowing the market. This allows fine tuning and further upgrades before congesting the market with possible technical problems.

End of 2010 is this year mind you. Typically new offerings are pushed back. Despite Clear's claim, I just have a strange suspicion that we will see these WiMax smartphones from Sprint near October. If not, end of year is not bad considering the market share of 4G right now.

This sounds like speculation from Clear to me. If this came out of Sprint's mouth or a manufacturer's I'd give it more credance.

LG has a WiMax handset in the works, and I've been so slammed at work I haven't had a chance to check out if/when LG has the floor at CES but I suspect a mention of a 4G LG phone will be forthcoming. now that could still mean end of 2010, but i'm predicting summer-ish from what my LG guy has been saying.

i'm hoping and praying more then anything that someone will come out and blow our minds with new battery technology that can keep up with these mobile beasts.
