Glad to see that they are updating the speed of their 3G network. What about the people that haven't seen it yet? How about you spend the money to "expand" it first.

Why? AT&T's 3G already covers 75% of Americans. I think the point is that is all they care to cover. Frankly, I don't have a problem with it. If they have signed up the amount of subscribers that they have in Metro areas then yes provide those individuals with a better 3G experience. Anyone in a non-3G area knew what they were getting.

75% of population, not country coverage area.

I left At&T due to issues with T-mobile invasion in my area and my phones going sos, went to verizon. I might never go back unless they get something better then edge in the area. Hell by then Verizon will probably have full force LTE up and running.

Yes. Seventy-five percent of Americans...not America. It is wonderful that Verizon covers so much of the American landscape. They should thank Alltel for that if any of those executives are still around. But clearly AT&T does not care to cover every inch of the U.S. with 3G. No big deal. But the areas where they DO choose to cover should be well covered and that is what they are attempting to do here.

Exactly. People tend to forget Verizon had those old school networks to acquire. But I'm in agreement with you. AT&T should cover the areas they decide to and do it well. Like T-Mo for example. Sure they dont have a big footprint, but in the areas where they have coverage, the service does ...

Im just not sure how they can claim the "best 3G experience" just because they can talk and surf the web at the same time. I still have not found a use for that, nor ever wanted to for that matter.
Isn't part of the experience not getting pissed off because you pick up your device and are dealing with painfully slow internet speeds because you just stepped out of 3G coverage. I would have to think coverage needs to play a big part in the experience.
With all the problems the iPhone caused on their network (crippling it in some cases) I have to call BS on their entire campaign.

I'm on Verizon and I CAN'T talk and surf at the same time (on the same handset at least) and would like to if Verizon offered that feature. I guess I am that VZW customer who CAN do it because I carry two phones around. AT&T's 3G IS faster than Verizon's (where it is available, of course) and that is the only time this talk and surf option is available so it would not be slow.

It's not that Verizon or Sprint don't "offer" that feature. CDMA (which sprint & verizon use) isn't capable of doing simultaneous voice/data connections. It's probably one of the few upsides to GSM honostly, on the whole i personally think there are more benefits to CDMA..but that's just me.

To the guy who said, you knew what you were getting when you signed up, I have been with then since before they had 3G at all. And no I do not like that they are upgrading there 3G when my state only has in in 3 cities to begin with. I am not under contract and I guess I will be leaving them, since I was told that any new phone I might want to get will most likely have to have a $30 data plane with it. And yes I know that Verizon will require the same thing but at least they offer 3G here not like AT&T who only like to charge me for it even when they dont offer it, I am out...

Actually, they are expanding services. They've spent a ton of money between the last part of 2009 and even more planned for 2010 for turning 2G to 2G/3G towers as well as purchased Centennial's markets for covering certain markets. I'd say that + increasing the security/speed of the 3G network is a pretty decent step.

I love how everyones hating on at&t right now for whatever reason they choose. Saying they're going to leave and go to Verizon/tMobile/Sprint or whomever. Reality is at&t isnt going anywhere. They're too huge to go anywhere because some people are unhappy with their 3G coverage. at&t's 3G covers more people than places and last time I checked its the people that keep a company in business. If you compare a verizon coverage map against a US population map you would see that there is 3g in areas that dont really need it. at&t's 3G is faster than verizons.
And on another note I cant wait until Verizon gets the iphone and has a flood of its customers using iphones. Lets see if your 3g can hold up against the pressure. Just my opinion.....
