Sadly, the DVD is not an apples to apples comparison. DVDs are static. The data on the disk never changes, and if the screen compresses a bit, or cuts off the outside 1 inch of display or some other compensation, no one really cares.

In the world of application development and gaming, where user interaction can cause completely random things to happen which the developer cannot guess in advance, or apps with news feeds like twitter where new content is pushed to the handheld on a constant basis, the solutions are not so simple.

Have you looked at the Blackberry lineup lately?

Every phone launched since the Bold 9000 falls into two categories:

Low-end - 320x240 resolution
High-end - 480x360 resolution

This is what has allowed the Blackberry developer community to flourish in ways that the WinMo community can't. Reworking a Tour application to run on a Storm only requires reworking the user input, NOT THE DEVICE OUTPUT, so it's less then half the work of rebuilding the whole application from the ground up.

Universal screen resolution on all three (existing) generations of iPhone is one of the key factors in app store growth on the Apple side. They ALL use 480x320 resolutions, so everything is backward compatible. The problem is that 480x320 on a 3.5 inch diagonal is relatively poor resolution quality in 2010. The Droid is on 0.2 inches larger on the diagonal but has 165% denser pixel count.

Resolution and screen size are critical to making a universal app front. It needs to be addressed soon.
