Nokia isn't relevant to the world of mobile devices anymore. They need to croak and stop leaching off of the intellectual property of capitalist companies.

Nokia products are far more superior than Motorola, HTC, Sony, Samsung, Pantech, and Crapple. They are still very strong in Europe. Check your facts first. Thank you.

I agree that Nokia is strong in Europe, but owning a shop that repairs all brands of cell phones, Nokia, Pantech and iphone are 3 brands we get in for repair the most. The least HTC, Blackberry and Sanyo..

They are still #2 in sales world wide so you are grossly uninformed. Nokia phones sold in Europe are very advanced but they don't make cdma phones, the dominant system in the US so their sales are limited here..

They don't anymore. There was a company making cdma phones for Nokia for use on Verizon and Sprint but no longer...just asked my Verizon rep..

Nokia's #2 in sales only by cheap disposable handsets- in other words, trash markets. They're the new Everex.

Their marketshare of smartphones is sliding into oblivion- it has shrunk faster than Windows Mobile and Palm (both dead OS's.) . All thoughout the world Nokia's smartphone OS share is shrinking about as fast as possible.

Their platforms are all abysmal failures critically and commercially.

Their profitability is plunging as well.

FAIL

Nokia & Ericsson developed GSM.

Nokia developed the protocol for TDMA to GSM handoff.

Nokia developed the GPRS protocol.

Nokia developed MMS & SMS.

Nokia (with Ericsson & Siemens) is basically the father of the GSM Protocol. Without Nokia we wouldn't have cell phones period.

Dumb dumb kids.

Every single GSM company leaches off of Nokia's Research & Development.

You should really follow the age old adage that unless you know, shutup.

GSM only became an accepted standard because the European Gov't didn't want a U.S. based wireless standard (Qualcomm's CDMA) despite its advantages.

3G service (HSDPA/WCDMA) is Qualcomm's technology.

Again FAIL.

Do you even know anything about GSM?

Read this young buck:

As for WCDMA, this was developed by NTT DoMoCoMo

Actually Motorola developed the mobile phone or bought the technology for it, they were first with AMPS, all others you're correct.

Actually the EU had european mobile companies develop gsm, the two biggest were Nokia and Ericsson. And I guess Siemans in that time. These were open source technologies.

Nokia makes some real sweet phone but as of late they haven't done much, outside of the N900.

What do we learn from this?

Nokia controls 47.1% of the market in smartphones
Rim (another company you don't like) controls 19.5
WINMO gets 12.4%
APPLE gets 10.7
While Linux (including android) 8.4%
Palm was .9%

Ok.. so 1 company controls more of the market than the next 4 competitors and they are no longer relevant? Yes, they used to control 60%+ but what happened in 2008-2009?
-1 RIM did something, because they went from 10% to almost 20% (aka, they got most of the market share Nokia "lost")

-Apple was released in several new markets, which allowed them to "gain" 5% of the market.

-Android, a totally new, user friendly version of Linux-base...
