Considering that Europe follows the model of "What is good for Nokia, is good for Europe", I wouldn't make any assumptions.

Apple & Microsoft have no friends whatsoever across the pond.

I agree it won't happen, but for a different reason. Nokia may even be correct in their claims- but it would create a nightmare.

With the current economic situation in the U.S. we simply cannot afford to have the E.U. off the market for one of our larger companies. Not being able to sell laptops, MP3 players, or phones in the E.U. would devestate Apple. Doing that much damage to an American company would leave our government with little recourse other than to take action that would cause problems for European companies here. Nobody wants a trade war.

I'd guess Apple will end up being told that they have to pay some royalty to Nokia- and it wouldn't shock me to find that the US Congress throws an amendment into an appropriations bill ...

You're aware that Europe has no equivalent technology of its own, right? Both major OS's are U.S. based. Linux is worthless. All of the major smartphone platforms that AREN'T losing market share are U.S. Based or Canadian based. We have our own wireless standards. No relevant handset makers even exist in Europe- Nokia and Sony Ericsson could disappear from the U.S. market and nobody would bat an eye. (I would for Sony Ericsson but that's living in the past.)

They can whine all they want, the truth of the matter is they need Apple/Microsoft products far more than we need Nokia's "GSM" patents. What are they going to do, switch to Linux? 🤣 Enjoy your future of further technological irrelevance.

lol.. yes, no one uses GSM anymore.. let's just turn off all the GSM towers and rely only on CDMA/WCDMA.. I'm sure that att would love having their coverage shrink to 1/5th it's size overnight.
