LTE 700?
they won 700 spectrum, Sprint has 1700 from the Nextel Merge. 1700 would be aweful for LTE the bandwith is too high and would have terrible building penetration, thats why 700 was so key.

You shouldn't dismiss higher spectrum so quickly. It is true that 700 will penetrate better and travel further. This is an advantage, but higher frequencies have a definite advantage in other areas that 700 can't match. Speed is one of them as well as the ability to handle more traffic and have less interference. I think you will find end usage to be a wash.

Nextel was awarded 2500 mHz spectrum from Public Safety relocation. AWS (1700/2100) was bid on by T-Mobile and MetroPCS or Leap (or both). No one wants mix-matched spectrum if it can be avoided.

Verizon will eventually tap into their AWS spectrum for LTE. For markets such as New York, Philadelphia, Miami, Chicago, and even St Louis as examples where AWS will need to be used on top of 700 to handle capacity. Since Verizon doesn't have AWS covering the entire country, they won't tap into that right away. They only cover the eastern half of the country with the regional AWS F blocks at 20mhz, and A & B blocks for Louisiana where the Mississippi Valley F Block doesn't cover, and A & B block...

Just hoarding spectrum. Someone could have used this to create a brand new wireless carrier. I am glad the block Verizon purchased in 700 auction DOES have time restraints or they would probably just let it sit gathering dust as well.

I seriously doubt anyone but T-mobile will make any serious plays with the 1700 MHz band any time soon. The upgrade paths I see for VZW are:
(A) LTE rolls out fine, Verizon migrates all the data customers to 4G and then migrates the 1900 MHz band over to LTE, leaving the 850 MHz bands on CDMA voice, abandoning EVDO altogether. This preferred migration would be on the 10-15 year horizon.
(B) LTE turns out to work even better than expected. Public uptake is huge, and VZW runs out of spectrum in key markets in less then 5 years and the LTE network gets "iBoned" really quickly. There won't be ...
