Eliminate Subsidies, Prepay for your service

This whole industry needs massive reforms. There is way too much lack of transparency in both billing and handset costs. Its not secret that Telecoms are businesses that want to maximize profits[ for themselves/shareholders]. To be fair, the average US consumer is used to having their device subsidized to where is 'appears' to be free. So its hard to convince somebody to pay 'full value' when they have never done that well ... since mobile phones first became popular here about 1o yrs ago. Unfortunately, the average consumer has no idea of how much their mobile device is worth. They think that 199 is a good price for the iphone or whatever and have no idea how much they are actually paying for over the life of a 2yr contract. For example, th...

They already do smart guy.

You can get any Verizon Wireless or AT&T plan with or without an agreement. 100% month to month.

Talk about uneducated consumers. You post a rant and don't even know your demand has already been satisfied. Customer have the choice and still overwhelmingly choose to have an agreement.

No regulation is needed when customers have choice.

I should have explained it better. What I meant was Prepaid plan with voice/sms/ unlimited 3g data etc that is exactly the same as a post paid plan for both individuals/families. Verizon definately doesn't offer that, neither does at&t. The only one that offers that service that I know of is t-mobile but they don't advertise it. I'm currently using prepaid t-mobile flexpay which is exactly the same as a post paid plan with 500min/unlted sms/unlimited 3g internet for $60 [ very good value if you are fortunate to live an area that has tmob 3g]. These plans need to be made available on all major providers.

No. Verizon does not offer a pre-pay plan with unlimited voice, messaging and data included, but they do offer a Month-to-Month, No Contract option (simply provide your own handset or purchase one at full retail price from VZW).

So other than the fact that those with bad credit cannot get a postapid plan what does this have to do with eliminating subsidies?

One has nothing to do with the other. If you can get the exact same rate plan and not deal with subsidies your goal is accomplished. If your credit sucks having more choices in prepaid might be a concern but it has nothing to do with this post and discussion.

AT&T actually does have that version. It's a Go-Phone plan w/unlt. talk and text for $60. You can purchase your handset outright from any store and start service with no contract and just add the features you want on. The only thing AT&T contracts for his handsets, so you'd have any normal plan they have as well, just no contract and a huge $400-$999 hole in your piggy bank.

I don't see what the problem with contracts. I've had no problem with any phone I've ever been contracted under other than wanting the newest, shiny device for low costs.

Actually that plan doesn't have what he asked for, which is also unlimited data.

So lemme get this straight Sir.Whines-A-Lot,

You want an absolutely rockin' phone, with a rockin' plan, with no contract (thus the company has no faith you will stay with them for very long) and minimal cost (cause if it was too high or as high as it should be, you would complain about that too, wouldn't you?) and you want this done immediately? Let me explain how it really works: You sign a contract, get a phone for a subsidized price (Like a $500 phone for only $50) and then pay a monthly rate that YOU, the customer agree to. This service is garunteed almost anywhere nationwide, with, in some cases, unlimited calling, texting, and data at broadband speeds. And you are saying that is not enough, and you want to rather pay out right for ...

People will pay per month what they pay for phone service.

IF we charged 120 dollars for lg 300s

eventually the industry would walk its way back up to around were it is right now.

How much do Eurpean phone companies charge per month?

I bet you its around what we pay here , and at least the companies here help pay for the phones.

exactly. That's what a lot of people don't get about euro plans. Yes, they are 15-20 a month, but they include only a handful of minutes, at least in the UK, the minutes are only good for mobile to mobile calling (you pay to call landlines) and even unlimited texting plans do not include picture messaging.

They have nothing like mobile to mobile, in calling, unlimited nights and weekends, etc.

Now, I would personally love to see more unsubsidized, multi-carrier phones, but unless the FCC outright bans ETF's, I don't think the american consumers would accept paying full retail for a phone, or dealing with phone manufacturers for warranty claims.

Nonsense. There are plenty of us that like them. I know I'm getting a phone for far less than the MSRP. I know my plan if a few bucks higher because of the discount on the phone- and I'm fine with it. I'm under contract meaning I agree to stay with a company I've been with for over a decade- fine with me.

It really isn't difficult. Unless you insist on having the most up to date phone and are willing to spend hundreds of dollars every few months to get it, our system works well. If you are willing to do that, nobody has ever told you that you couldn't pay MSRP for a phone.

With Verizon you can purchase ANY device (even a DROID) at retail price or provide your own and activate it with NO contract on a month to month plan and pay the EXACT price per month as though you were a contractual customer.

$149.99/Mth = Unlimited Talk, Text, Data

Does it require a credit check? yes....this covers the carrier's a$$ if you decide not to pay a bill or two.

This is in addition to the standard PREPAY service that is more limited and requires no credit check.
