exactly my thoughts. i have a few friends that work at at&t retail locations and they continue to be frustrated with the management pushing them to sell more and more data centric devices and then the customers are not able to use them to their full potential all the time.

It doesnt matter. People want an iphone, they got one choice. They'll go with ATT and start a blog the next day, complaining about service. Point is... they'll be under CONTRACT 😉

What kind of drugs are you on?? Didn't you read the article? It doesn't say anywhere that it wants customers to quit using data. Why can't you morons realize that they are trying to create a better user experience for everyone?? They can't just go throw a tower up on every f-ing corner.

why don't they just upgrade their edge towers to 3g and then they won't have to "throw up a tower on every f-ing corner" as you say.

and no i didn't have to take any drugs to think of that just use some COMMON SENSE.

Oh I'm sorry, I thought this article was about alleviating 3g network traffic not upgrading EDGE towers to 3g. Let me read it again.

don't you think if you upgraded the edge towers to 3g that would alleviate the strain on the current 3g network. i want to apoligize for having rational thoughts i guess they are frowned upon.

In 3g markets pretty much all towers have been converted to support gsm/umts services and any new towers going up in those markets have 2g/3g radios as well. They overlaid current 1900 mhz 3g signals with 850 mhz which was supposed to help, but upgrading current edge towers with 3g hardware will only increase the 3g footprint not alleviate congestion in current 3g markets. As nice as it would be to put up a tower on every corner there is too much red tape and not enough money to get that done. adding more wifi hotspots and femto cells is a great step. Getting apple to improve their RF technology would also help a ton.

no, don't bother reading the article again. Instead focus on the fact that adding 3g to an existing tower would have the exact same effect as throwing up more towers as you suggest. Only its less expensive and more feasible.

also concentrate on the fact that verizon, with a similar customer base, does not have these issues.

this is what you shoukd do. I don't think reading the article aain will bring you any additional understanding.

Ok.. a similar customer base numerically but at&t's smartphone users double the data throughput. Your comparison isn't fair. If all towers in a 3g market already have 3g radios(which is largely the case) then adding more towers is the only solution besides increasing wifi coverage and offering femtocell service in buildings.

I did read the article. It says they want you to do your browsing at wi-fi hotspots. Q. WHY THE HELL DO I NEED 3G to use my phone at a 3G hotspot? A. I DON't. They're on drugs and apparently you are too....

Why wouldn't you want more areas with free wifi that offer faster speeds than any mobile provider can currently offer? Why is offering more options to create a better user experience for everyone seen as bad to you?

The answer is simple, fanboys of other carriers want to try to make something AT&T is doing that is great look bad. Connecting to WiFi is much better than connection to a 3G network. Allowing customers to have free WiFi spots means fewer people on the cell network and faster speeds for everyone, whether on WiFi or not.

Simply put, this is only good. It doesn't fix the problem totally, but it does make things better.

how is this "good" in any stretch of the imagination.

it is at BEST , makeing the most out of the "bad"

So ATT does not have a great 3g footprint , but even were they have 3g they have bandwith issues.

they want customers to check for wifi before they look something up on thier phone?

there is not a snowballs chance in hell , i am going to bounce around and check for hotspots before I do what ever it is I have to do on my phone.

Hell i was allready pissed off when i had to turn my 3g on and off on my Iphone to make it last threw the day.

The thing is getting closer to being called the Ihassle .

I am so much more happy with the Hero , it is by far a better phone and its only a midlevel Android Device.

Ummm... yes, they could put up a tower "on every f-ing corner". They should either stop selling devices that they can't support, or fix their network.

And exactly how are they going to force property owners to allow them to put the towers up? Even if they could afford to put up 100,000,000 towers this week that doesn't mean people in locations that need towers are going to allow them to be built there.

Thank you! You'd think they've never heard of NIMBY! You know where a great place to put towers is?? ON top of schools! But the DB parents who pump their kids full of junk food protest and won't allow towers to be installed and then have the gaul to come in and complain about service in their neighborhood.(true story)

They already have 2G towers in place. They can add or replace. Or, they can put a tower everywhere Verizon already has one.

Once again, the 3G areas already have towers with 3G. Adding 3G to all of the 2G towers wouldn't help with the current problem, it would only expand the 3G footprint.

And no, they can't just go put towers everywhere Verizon has them. The land those towers are sitting on is not free for anyone to take. The property owners must agree to have the tower placed on their land. Many people don't want that, and few people would want two.

I understand the fact that network capacity is not free. I mean that AT&T need to invest in order to support their customer's devices properly. They haven't done that.

Actually BluetoothGuy, they can't put a tower up on every f-ing corner. The FCC regulates this as well as people who own the property. Try doing a little research before talking out of your ass.

I didn't say that they could do it for free. I said they could do it.
