From what I've read about QChat, it was a clusterf**k from the get-go.

Sprint screwed up the launch of Qchat by not offering it in all markets. Then to top that off the network wasn't set up for Qchat in all areas. Some areas still have to be upgraded to EVDOrA which means no PTT. You would think they would make sure the whole network is up to it before rolling out a new feature such as this. That is one of those things that should work on the entire native network not just portions of it.

No effort seemed to be put into working on Qchat once the first phones came out. A Qchat BB or other smartphone would have been a great addition to the lineup.

And I think with other companies offering a PTT under even their most basic networks, Sprint could have offered it under EVDO solely, not just Rev. A.

But I have to agree. Having sold for Sprint, it was ridiculous how many of those phones came back simply because people couldn't use the PTT in the places their Nextel phones did work. My biggest push is for Sprint to get rid of Nextel all together...but you know...they won't.

Even after seeing what's happened to the company SINCE the Nextel purchase...it boggles the mind.

In many ways Qchat was poorly handled, that's for certain. But I have to say that PTT communications all the way across the US between Nextel iDEN DC phones and Sprint CDMA Qchat phones works very well now, and has for some time.

I'm a Nextel person, and I'm no fan of Sprint, but giving credit where it is due, our family's experience with iDEN-to-Qchat and also Qchat-to-Qchat, has been quite good. In the real world (where Qchat coverage exists of course), Qchat has been working very well for us for awhile.

Given that the legacy Sprint people uniformly despise and deride all things Nextel, and given that Sprint could easily have implemented Q...

Its funny you say that, long before the Tour came out, before it was even renamed the Tour, my sprint rep told me that it was going to have Qchat. i was thinking "sweet a sick looking bb, with a nice screen, camera, Rev. A and PTT!" everything i ever wanted in a bb, but alas no Qchat, probably knew then that they were going to drop it, and the reason why the Tour didn't come with it, such a shame.

So much money wasted. Great post, by the way. ;)
