ATT missed a golden opportunity to take revenue from iPhone to expand 3G coverage and strengthen infrastructure.
What a shame... 🤭

In most major cities AT&T broadcasts 3G on multiple spectrums (they've done this as of 2009) , Verizon Wireless's 3G Network only broadcasts on one. Although it's been criticized, AT&T's 3G network is significantly more robust in densely populated areas.

If Verizon Wireless were to have ANY phones that people actually used data on, they'd be suffering far more outages.

Verizon Wireless also didn't build out much of their network- Alltel did, and they just inherited it from Alltel (smart move) , or pulled it from Sprint. AT&T's only partner with wireless T-Mobile, has been laggard.

New York is as densely populated as it gets and iphone users are losing it there. One sob story.

The solution is simple. Free the iphone from AT&T's clutches and let's put your theory to the test.

It's not up to him to do that. It's up to Apple. I'm so sick of this iPhone fad. It's mention even in the news! My local news station keeps bragging about its iPhone news app. It's really annoying!

Especially now that WinMo, RIM, and Android all have app stores/marketplaces. What I'm saying is Apple isn't the only one with apps anymore.

And unlike the iPhone, I don't have to hack my Windows, Blackberry, or Android phone to put apps on it that don't come from said marketplace.

There is a distinct difference though.
1x = voice (850MHz)
EVDO = data (1900MHz)
vs.
GSM/EDGE = voice/data mixed on 850/1900
3G UMTS/HSPA voice/data mixed on 850/1900

Sure data is only on 1900MHz, but as long as voice and data works, who cares. Voice is typically more sensitive to QoS than data. To the average consumer, it does not matter, as long as it works. 3G voice on 1900MHz only blew chunks because of capacity (only 5MHz) and poor signal.

Again, people don't care that VZW purchased VZW, they just care whether service works where they need it.

Verizon's 1x is 800Mhz not 850.

850 is often referred to as 800.

Also, 1X and EVDO can operate on either 850 or 1900.

ATT's 3G GSM runs 850, 1900, and 2100. 2100 is solely for one direction, 850 or 1900 for the other direction. This means that an extra radio has to run to run 3G on GSM. Adds a bit more battery drain too.

Almost....

GSM, CDMA, HSPA/UMTS, EVDO, etc can ALL run in either the 850 (or 800 if you like), PCS (aka 1900) or AWS (1700/2100 MHz) bands. If a carrier (like T-Mo) chooses to deploy in the AWS band, then their tower-to-mobile transmission is in the 2100 block and the mobile-to-tower transmission is in the 1700 block. However, if deployed in the 850/800 or PCS/1900 bands, both directions have frequencies within those same bands. For example, B Band in the 850 spectrum will use 880-890 MHz for tower-to-mobile and 835-845 MHz for mobile-to-tower; PCS B Block will use 1950-1965 MHz for tower-to-mobile and 1870-1885 for mobile-to-tower.

And the extra battery drain when running 3G GSM is because the technology is W-CDMA based. CDMA uses sig...

In my area alone, Verizon added 3 brand spanking new towers with EV-DO this year. In a neighboring county, Verizon put 6 new towers this year....ALL with EV-DO...

I am not in an Alltel area at all.
