Our 3G network covers approximately 233 million people, or 75% of the U.S. population

As an AT&T customer I find this very hard to believe. Even their own map does not support this.http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageview er/#?type=voice&3g=t&lat=43.281421863293644&l on=-97.91146406250002&sci=1

Look more like 25% to me.

No. I don't think so. As soon as Verizon gets the iphone they'll be singing its praises.

No iPhone for Verizon after all this crap. Gloves are off, pretty sure Apple isn't jumping in the bed with a company that is bashing them.

the only commercial that "bashed" the iphone was the idon't compain, which is more positioning the Droid as an anti-iphone (not against, but rather an alternative instead of just a clone)"

For years Apple released "i'm a mac" ads, and yet they continue to make software for Windows and windows continues to make software for them.

The only company acting irrationally is ATT because someone pulled off ads as "misleading" (read, requiring thought) as they run and actually managed to make them entertaining.

Apple is a business. Ignoring over 80 million potential customers because your ego got a bo bo isn't sound business.

Would be nice for them to have sure but they're doing just fine without it. If anybody needs the iPhone right now to save their asses, it's Sprint.

Let AT&T handle the stupid kiddies and Apple fanboys hogging up their network resources. We don't want that **** here on Verizon.

In this last ad they went out of their way not to bash the iPhone, people. The other misfits were asking why it was there since it was so awesome and could do such cool stuff, etc. They aren't bashing the iPhone and Apple cares more about the bottom line than if somebody bashes one of their products. The fact remains that other cell phone manufacturers are using the iPhone as the gold standard. It would be nice to see Verizon get the iPhone.

If Verizon were to get the iPhone, would they be able to handle the capacity? iPhone users have clogged AT&T's network in many markets (even more so in 3G markets with a lack of spectrum). I believe if what's been posted on other websites about a CDMA/GSM/UMTS version of the iPhone being available, then it could be possible Verizon & Sprint on the CDMA side, & T-Mobile USA could get the iPhone in the future. Personally, I could careless if the iPhone comes to Verizon. I have yet to take advantage of using Vcast on a regular basis.

They have coverage in most of the major cities and metropolitan areas. That will get them coverage for most of the POPULATION. One square mile of dense city coverage can get you thousands of people covered, while coverage of a large rural area can only get you 1 or 2 people covered.

Looks to me like they have nearly every major city in the US covered... so they are probably right in their claim. But, how STRONG that coverage is in those areas is questionable... and Verizon is correct in pointing out that the AREA they cover pales in comparison to Verizon's.

So, they are probably both right... but when your OWN website shows the same map Verizon is using... how can you attempt to claim this is false advertising? The ads are CLEAR in sta...

I have to concur. ATT may cover 75 % of the pop of the US by hitting all cities say 50K and larger, but as one goes from big city A to big city B on the back roads one may not have any 3G coverage. Bye Bye GPS maps from your cellular provider's 3G system on your cell phone.

Also within those Big Cities I bet Verizon has fewer dead spots and dropped calls. Those Verizon haters I said fewer not NONE, just fewer dead spots and dropped calls than the more bars company.

Completely untrue in all cases. When you leave a 3G area, you automatically flip to EDGE, and the GPS transitions all on its own. I know this because I work on the western edge of WI, and travel to Minneapolis/St Paul often.

The biggest problem is that John Q Cellphone user equates 3G coverage with voice coverage. I work for an AT&T retailer, and you don't know how many people think that having 3G will enhance their voice coverage. Heck, 75% of the population probably thinks "3G" means "3gigabytes"...

The biggest problem with what all of the cell companies are doing since AT&T came out with "3G" coverage is this:

They're comparing apples to oranges.

Why? Because GSM 3G coverage is faster than CDMA 3G coverage on average. This is because there are 3 different types of EVDO (rev. A,0,1), while GSM 3G coverage is uniform in technology and speeds. The majority of the EVDO (Verizon and Sprint's 3G coverage) in the US is the older type, which is not any diffe...

Verizon has Rev A (Broadband Access) and 1x (National Access) BOTH are 3G. So it's not Verizon's fault that Edge is 2.5G. As to customer's being clueless...that's AT&T's problem. The solution is simple...BUILD out their 3G network.

Verizon's customers are just as clueless as AT&T's are. Everyone thinks "3G" is an actual measure of the speed... which isn't true at all.

No, its really simple at&t covers areas which are highly populated not actual coverage wise. Like south Florida, NY, Souther Cal, Most of the east coast etc... So since they only cover those areas they can cover almost the entire US populous.

Remember, the U.S. population is not spread out evenly across the continent. People cluster near large cities and along the Atlantic/Pacific coasts. AT&T's 3G network covers 75% of the population, but that doesn't mean it covers 75% of the land area of the U.S. That's ridiculous, and no carrier does it. AT&T's 3G network is available where 3/4 of us live, work and play -- near the coasts and big cities.

3/4 of us live work and play there...but that still leaves 120 million+ with no 3G coverage. That's the point of the ad.

That would seem to be AT&T's point - how would a 'reasonable' person perceive the message in the VZW ad campaign.

At first glance (I consider myself more or less reasonable), I took it to be a claim by VZW that there was NO coverage by AT&T in those areas. Given that I'm an agent for 3 top tier carriers, and I made that initial mistake about the coverage claims, it would seem reasonable that the ads are misleading... any fine print aside.

Perhaps my choice of the phrase fine print was less then 100% technically accurate as it's there, but easily missed as the presentation is a coverage map.

My point is unfortunately the majority of cell phone users are still not tech savvy power users with smart phones, thus the market segment that those ads are designed for could easily infer that 3G coverage is VOICE coverage.
