I guess I'll have to say it or at least bring it up. I'm not a coverage expert but I do pay enough attention to this stuff to know that while AT&T's network 3g OR NOT 3G in certain areas , there is NO WAY that Verizon has all of that area of the Unite States map that is shaded in red COVERED with their VOICE signal let alone 3G. No offense to anyone. I'm not a "fan boy", I don't use AT&T for wireless service. It just seems like no one EVER questions the accuracy of Verizon and their accuracy that is depicted on THEIR "coverage map". The misfit commercial IS FUNNY though!

Some people act like they have stock in Verizon or AT&T, why is that. Where I live I don't get 3G with either one of them. 😡

And where I live, Las Vegas, all 4 national carriers have a lot of customers. The only carrier I've heard really bad things about is on the far westside part of town that's referred to as Summerlin, Verizon doesn't work all that way. But all 4 carriers have a lot of customers here.

Verizon's entire native network is EVDO (3g) and well over 90% of it is EVDO Rev A.

I've never been in an area without coverage, across multiple states and literally in the middle of nowhere. I'm not saying these places don't exist (I know they do) but Verizon's coverage is really huge, and their native network is really that big.

(Att's voice/2g coverage is nearly as large as Verizon's voice coverage. Where Verizon shines is their 3g data network, and how consistent that network is (much harder to overload it for dropped calls). Coverage is entirely based on where you live, this is true, but as far as nationwide, verizon's 3g does dwarf ATT's. Yes, att has a lot of cities covered, which is good, but there are still millions witho...

It's nice to have somebody as honest as you on Phone Scoop Menno. There are so, so many fanboy's on Phone Scoop.

Anyway, about Verizon's 4G, IF they have a no contract option like Clear does, I might give them a shot, because the 700mhz Verizon owns penetrates buildings much, much better than Clear does. I almost never get above 4mbps inside my room where I live. But yet I know Clear's network is capable of well above the speeds I get in my room. Surely Las Vegas will be among the cities that Verizon will launch 4G in before the end of 2010 I'm sure. And unlike Clear, hopefully Verizon will cover Boulder City, Nv also!!!

It depends... If Verizon places a cap on LTE, I think you should stay with Clear. Verizon has the Month-to-Month option as long as you pay full retail for your LTE data card. Oh... Full retail will likely NOT be the $50 you paid with Clear.

Thanks for the advice, does Verizon think their LTE USB modems are more special than Clear's WiMAX USB modems? What's the deal with Verizon? Greedy? It's just a plastic antenna thingy with a usb connector is all!

There are people on Phone Scoop who seem to think Verizon's LTE will be unlimited. But it'll probably be another 6 months or so before we know for sure.

2010 is going to be a really, really eXciting year for those like you and me!!!

I don't know, but even Clear's WiMax/Ev-Do modems are in excess of two hundred bucks (and Sprint's). Well you know Verizon is going to make their devices backwards compatible with EV-DO...so expect at least $219.99 (if not more).

Yeah, your ritht, they'll be Rev.A/LTE. $219-$250, well, hopefully I'll get some OT. Verizon claims to have 4G upNRunning by early 2010, which really isn't all that far away.

There will be a contract free option, just get the card at retail price, and you'll be able to go month to month.

Some places do give a slight discount for month to month purchases, but that is up to the individual store.

Azeron thinks that Verizon's 4G LTE modem will cost me more than the $50 that I paid Clear for their 4G WiMAX modem. Does Verizon think they're special? How much more are we talking about here?

Just for the record, yes I'm happy with Clear, but I believe that Verizon's 700mhz will penetrate much better, and specifically inside my room, I don't get above 4mbps very often. So it would be nice to have that building penetration.

It is awesome to hear testimonies of Clear's service. The 700mhz spectrum is a plus for LTE. But I also welcome the choice. I tend to look at speeds differently. I think 4-7Mbs is plenty fast for my needs. Many may require faster. My Wife and I are running a Roadrunner plan at home with the same speeds as Clear. It is more than enough. For me to have the flexibility of mobility with it makes Clear our automatic choice. The current price is also the major deal for us. I have been an advocate for WiMax for 4 years now and to see it "finally" making its way into the real world is still too long. I have been waiting since yesterday for WiMax.

It depends on who they get to make the modem. Qualcomm (the CDMA chip maker) charges quite a bit for the chips, so that inflates the price, plus the company that makes the device might add on a nice profit.

Generally it's the cellphone makers who make the retail prices, not carriers.

Verizon announced that when they turn LTE on it will not be a few cities at a time like when they turned on Ev-DO. That will be nice, but I doubt my area will have it.

Sorry, but they do. The fact that you find it difficult to believe is humorous, honestly. Their native coverage is ridiculous. Combining Alltel with Verizon just was not fair. But what could the FCC do after allowing Cingular to buy ATTWS and Sprint to buy Nextel (talk about an albatross around one's neck). anyway, they definitely have that coverage. The real bone of contention is IS that coverage National Access (1x) and Broadband (EV-DO) or ALL EV-DO? Either way it is going to give Phone Scoop plenty of hits and Verizon-philes and AT&T-philes try to smash one another in the names of their corps. It is really entertaining.

but the fact remains that even though Verizon Wireless shades their coverage map in with red (indicating voice service availability).... that doesn't mean that there is actually a CDMA signal available... even worse, probably not such a signal for many miles.

The only places the map will be wrong is in areas where a building has gone up that blocks signal that the engineers have not found out about to adjust the map. The map is based on projected signal coverage based on local topography from the towers. VZW knows the exact location of every tower they own, they know the power output on the tower and the expected range of the tower at its height and power output, and the map is built on that just like every oth

I don't care either way either... But i had Verizon prior to moving to Buffalo NY 3 years ago... Switched to ATT (cingular back then) because i would be at my apartment downtown Buffalo (right downtown) and i had no coverage in my apartment! I had to go outside to make a call! To me this was crazy! So Verizon isent perfect! And like i said i don't care either way i am only with AT&T cause there service works for me!

Interesting. I live an hour and 10min east from you. Since my job requires me to travel to Buffalo periodically, I have actually found Sprint to be the most effective choice at a much cheaper price. It is funny that Sprint with a much larger 3G footprint than AT&T has eluded any comparison.

I have no need for either of the two largest carriers.

My favorite stops in Buffalo for food?
Ted's hotdogs
Mighty Taco
Bozanna's Pizza
Anchor Bar

The new wind turbines actually look pretty cool on the edge of Erie's beachline.
