Not sure I get this ...

While I'm all for some oversight of some of the nonsense that wireless providers like to pull out of their butts to rack up more charges on their customers, I have to say I don't really see the problem with an increased ETF on a higher priced phone. What they *should* do, in my opinion (for what's its worth), is prorate the ETF based on the markdown provided on the phone for going under contract.

So, for the simplicity of math here, if I buy a phone that without a contract costs $560 and I buy it for $200 with a 2yr contract, I'm getting a $360 markdown. Why not just pro-rate the markdown as an ETF at $15 a month? So if I jump out of my contract after one month, I owe $345. If I jump out after a year, then I owe $180.

Maybe the ...

this is not greed. as was staed in the threads when the etf increase was released verizon is protecting their investment from fraudulent activity. on an average it costs wireless companies 450.00 to activate a new subscriber. if you were running a vehicle repair shop and discounted all the parts so your customers paid next to nothing for them but had them sign a contract stating they can't get their cars fixed anywhere else or they pay back a portion of the cost of parts. it's the same d@mn thing. the more the subsidy, the more the etf. it's fair.

No other industry does this and I want it to stop. Now they are subsidizing laptops with data cards in them. I remember when America Online and Compuserv would pay people to sign up for three years or MCI and AT&T would pay people to make them their long distance providers. These things are silly. Americans do not want to pay for anything. It is just sickening.

listen to yourself. this is what i have been saying. americans what everything for free. but what verizon is trying to show people is that there are consequences for your actions. you get a discount off the phone...but leave early and you gotta pay.

How is it greed to want to recoup what you ALREADY SPENT on the handset? You need to take the blinders off.

The only greed here is the people like you who are want expensive phones for cheap and then expect to be able break the oncratc you signed and still come out ahead. If you sign a contract you should be able to stick by your word, If you can't IMO you are worthless. But then I guess I'm one of very few who believe that a man's word is (or should be) worth something.
