Not sold by carriers???
I didn't see anywhere in the reference information that it would NOT be sold by carriers and that it would be unlocked. It listed a SIM-Free price and also that it would be offered subsized in the official Nokia Blog.

Nokia often sells phones unlocked, but it will depend on what they want to do with the carriers in each country. I'm pretty sure I saw a news piece about an AWS 1700 band capable N900, so that points to T Mobile selling (and almost certainly subsidizing) a version of it at some point. But it's all up to Nokia's strategists.
Despite having a rabid but miniscule following, the Internet tablets (the things that ran Maemo prior to the N900) had solid support from Nokia; even if no carriers offer this thing, I suspect it will be at least a little successful.

I am intrigued by the N900 but I was waiting to see how much T-Mobile would sell it for on contract. I assumed that Nokia and T-Mobile already had something in place since T-Mo is the only carrier in the world that uses AWS 1700.
However, Nokia is now shipping the N900 world wide (even in the US!) and there hasn't even been a rumor about it being launched on T-Mo. That's pretty surprising and points to no plan being currently in place between the manufacturer and the carrier. Maybe something is still being worked out between the two but if so, I can't imagine that T-Mobile is particularly pleased with Nokia launching a potential flagship device without the partnership.
