I don't see a problem...

If there is a larger subsidy then there should be a larger ETF. I say make the ETF the discount of the phone. If it is $150 with a mail in rebate then make the ETF $200.

I cannot wait until consumers have to buy their devices directly from the manufacturers.

I agree, there should be no subsidy. I don't think you would see a rush of people purchasing landlines. I think a few things will happen. You will see a slight drop in price on smartphones. Instead of them being $500 or $600...they may drop to $300. People will also be a bit wiser on what phones they select, because ultimately, it will be there problem if they picked the wrong phone. You'll also see Samsung, Sony, LG, and others start opening their own retail stores much like Apple has done only in a larger way...especially if cellular service stores are downgraded...

And I bet you won't see a Storm or Bold being sold for what VZW, ATT or whomever say the retail cost of it is.

It will drive the prices down on these phones, yes you will pay more then a subsidy price, but you won't be paying $500.00 either.

You may be correct. This is my dream scenario for wireless in the U.S. Let the wireless carriers sell service only. Let the manufacturers sell direct to the consumer.

Have you ever looked at the invoice on handsets from the manufacturer? Stores dont make much on the handsets. The money is in the contract, which is why subsidizing is good for them.

If people actually had to pay retail for handsets without the subsidizations, they would flip out even more.

*Note, I agree that buying at retail should allow a contract free option from all carriers, and I do purchase all my phones outright so as to avoid having to renew contracts unless I want too.*
