Manufacturing hype.

Okay, the commercials are funny. The marketing guys are going overboard with this hype machine now, however.

I have to agree with this one. I feel like there is tech hype over this, but not real consumer hype. They are doing this to make it seem like consumers are about to jump all over this, but...and as much as it pains me to say this...this isn't a new iPhone release.

Google and Verizon have decided to dig deep into their pockets to pay the media and hype a product that in reality, Verizon and Google care nothing about. The only motivation here is to stop the interest in AT&T while they are valnerable.

I do not like AT&T, But this is fabricated hype by Verizon and Google. Not public interest hype. The public is being fed false petentions. Verizon can't yet get the Pre and Google has no vested interest in the Pre, So they had to pick a mutually collaborated device to go head to head now for hype before the holidays rather than later.

While the Droid will fair well because of deep pockets, I still contend that this will have a moderate backfire on all that invested. The Pre is the true competitor r...

Just saying....

The Pre has a lot of potential, it's the only platform that seems to make an effort to match the attention to detail of the iPhone instead of just offering checklist features.

It still needs a lot of optimization and heavy work on Palm's end before it is a viable alternative (It's too slow, too resource hogging, and it's going against its main competitive advantage of multitasking... uh oh) , but only Palm seems to grasp why the iPhone is popular.

Unfortunately, Verizon Wireless shot the Pre in the foot by lying and telling everyone they'd get it in a few months.

agreed slammer, and i'm a pre owner (proud one too!). for this phone to really tackle the iPhone they need to unleash the GPU on their chip, right now the CPU is doing double duty of data processing and rendering visuals. it's a strong chip so it does this passably, but until they harness the full potential of the OMAP 3430 the Pre will get a lot of "very cool but.."

you know the Droid has a lot going for besides just "deep pockets"

I for one am hyped about this device
5mp camera
free google gps
open devlopment
mulitasking
wifi... one of the first Verizon Devices under new policy
physical keyboard...yes i know it is not a good one, but sometimes i get tired of touch screen, especially on web browsing when you have to pull up virtual keyboard all the time
the android market is growing and millions are already using gmail so I see this as a win for Verizon/Google/Motorola and the consumer...

The pre is nice and has many things better then the iphone and so will the droid. Verizon has a heavy phone lineup this Christmas.. don't forget the Imagio for you windows lovers as well as the Storm 2 and...

No one is denying that the Droid has a lot of features (again, I don't trust anything Motorola makes, no matter what OS is behind it). We are just talking about this so called hype. People were lined up for the iPhone...I doubt that will be the case for the Droid.

These are mostly "Checklist Features" - saying it has a hardware keyboard, 5MP camera, Multitasking, etc. is great for a checklist, but it does not make a better phone.

In the case of the Droid, you have two crappy keyboards- two crappy keyboards aren't better than one good on-screen or physical keyboard. A 5MP camera is nice, but it's not necessarily better than 3.2MP camera that focuses better and adjusts brightness/color better. Multitasking is nice, but not if it leads to lag and is implemented poorly.

There are some amazing (and free) onscreen keyboards for android phones, and the screen space available for the Droid will make these keys work very well.

camera's are software dependent, and software can be updated.

The multi-tasking seems to work VERY well on this new droid. the only comments for "lag" are coming from the current camera app and transitioning between home screens, not with applications.

Those advertised features are showing what is different about the device

exactly, just ask the bberry tour what it thinks of HTC's 5mp camera... tour's 3.2mp cam > then HTC's 5mp any day. guess i'll reserve my judgement on the Droid until I see it in action tomorrow.

I know, i have had people outside of work ask me about a bunch of times... I think it will be bigger then people are giving it credit for. I don't know if the launch will be huge, we are still aways off from Christmas... But I bet it has some killer numbers by the end of the year

I was going to post the same thing a while ago...but figured I'd just get called a fan-boy. Opening early is overkill....but it sure sounds cool!

Nov 3, 2009, 3:12 PM
I do agree on the early opening as overkill... but you can say that about all launches...iphone, blackberry, ps3, xbox, wii

it is always publicity when they do it....not like people won't just come in a few extra hours later. I know when I bought my 360 I was in line at 3am store opened at 6am and everyone was sold out at 7 am..... if everyone would have kept normal hours the outcome would not have changed.... I would have just got a few more hours of sleep

you obviously haven't been in a verizon store anytime recently.

I've had more inquiries about the Droid than I've had for ANY OTHER PHONE launched since I started working for verizon almost two years ago.

This launch doesn't have the apple marketing machine behind it, but that doesn't mean that there isn't public hype.

Do you think Verizon will keep up with the demand? Shopping season is just kicking into high gear.

You probably know I'm a security guard, I'm probably going to get some OT on "Black Friday". I'm off from my regular post that day.

yeah I saw.. I think ATT had some issues around here too.. for about an hour whenever someone tried calling an ATT number, they went straight to voicemail options.. 🤣

Hub stores are corporate locations that are located in metropolitan areas, or somewhere where there are few other options to purchase the phone.

For example, around here, "high producing stores" will do a couple hundred phones a month. a hub store will do that in a few days.

What is DSL up to now a days? 3mbps?

My bus is late,...whatever, tonights my friday, I'm just sitting here at the bus stop reading tech websites, right now EngadgetHD.

Don't you live in rural PA? If so, I would think that Verizon's 4G would be where you are before Clear will, but heck, just a guess. How far outside Philly are you?

Same thing happened for the iPhone 3Gs release. Nothing innovative added at all, just more space, slightly enhanced the camera, yet the news hyped this new release for weeks. Headlines were littered with '3Gs' articles last summer. Same with the 2G -> 3G.

This, in my opinion, is much worthier of hype due to Verizon adopting a phone that is on-par with the iPhone. It's not just the phone and manufacturer, it's the network and newest Google OS that is worth some coverage.

Based on reviews of those who were lucky to get this phone sooner, it looks like this is THE hottest phone to have in the U.S. (today, of course). I will draw my on conclusions once I am able to get my hands on it and test it at the store.

At the end of the day, it's just another Android phone. There isn't really a whole lot here that's new, and given that Android's lagging behind the Palm and iPhone OS in terms of usability..

It's also why nobody gets excited about a new WinMo phone.

I wouldn't expect a whole lot that's new with the Droid. I believe its Google's intention to flood the market with Android platform phones in various shapes, color and styles and on all different carriers.

There is a lot behind the Android and Apple platforms at this point. WebOS is a wait and see for me. It could possibly be the best platform out there but it has a weak company behind it that could possibly keep it out of the race...Pa...

I've had 20 people in my store in the past week looking for information on this phone, most of them first time smartphone users.

I am a single indirect location that does about 200 contracts a month. That is 10% of a normal month looking at a SINGLE smartphone.

This is not manufactured hype
