Why Verizon's Droid Isn't an iPhone Killer

On paper, Verizon's Droid by Motorola seems like it should destroy the iPhone. Its 3.7-inch 480x854 display is dumbfounding compared to Apple's 3.5-inch 480x320 screen. It manages to include a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, yet at 0.54-inches it's scarcely thicker than the iPhone's 0.48-inches. It has a turn-by-turn GPS right out of the box, while the same feature on the iPhone will knock you back an extra $100. Yet, all this is not enough for the Droid to earn the status of "iPhone killer." For that, it will need to rob the iPhone of its customers, and it won't come even close.

Sure, the Droid's 5MP autofocus camera with a flash bests the iPhone's 3.2MP. Sure, it has an SD card slot, and a removable battery. The iPhone has neve

Well it's about time someone said it! VZW, Motorola, Android...what do those have to do with the iPhone!
You've got a better network, the inventor of cell phones (or something like that), and a new upcoming OS. Advertise that, don't go after ATT and the iPhone.
Hey don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the Droid. I just think VZW should have advertised it on its own merits. But I know there will be some ATT/iPhone users that will jump ship. Advertisement worked. 😕

Why do people act like the iPhone is God's gift to phones? I've played with one, and was NOT impressed.

Thats because you've "played with it". Take the time to USE one for an extended period of time and you might have a different opinion.

I've had BB, WinMo.....recently tried and returned the Pure. Prior to that the Xperia, Fuze, E90.......and I tried very hard to get through the transition phase (you know....that time frame when you are still just "playing with it" and learning to make it do all the things you want/need it to do). Nothing can be done easier on any other phone.

Would I rather have a different carrier? Yes please! Lucky for me, what I have works for me. I have...

I have used iPhones on many occasions. I wasn't totally impressed either. It has 2 things going for it. Speed, and Ease of Use. Using the ARM system's built-in GPU to render the desktop is a very smart idea, something other companies (MICROSOFT, RIM!) should take a look into.

What didn't impress me was several things.

1: No customizeability. Do you want it to go 'ding' when there's stuff? [Yes]||[No] That's about it. This was a huge problem on the Motorola Krave as well.

2: No multitasking beyond the Core system. Seriously. Multitasking started in the days of MacOS and Windows 3.1, back in the early 90's!

3: Limited support for downloading/uploading content. As in if I want to post to Craigslist, the answer to uploading pictures ...

You lost all credability when I picked up my iPhone and posted your WinMo phone for sale......AND.....I uploaded a picture of my desktop too....all right from my iPhone. Mmmmm-bye.

OK....just kidding about posting your WinMo phone...but I did post.

That is when the LTE iphone comes to Verizon.

Then ATT will look like a sinking ship with rats deserting it. LOL

Until that happens, ATT is living on borrowed time.

I agree, LTE will be the real game changer - just to throw in my two cents; I believe one of the main reasons this will not be an iphone killer is not because of what has what and why... but rather that people are highly accustomed to both having an i-pod and using itunes. Why carry two devices (ipod and a phone) when you can have them both wrapped up in a neat little package. Take that, throw in the 75,000+apps - and you have a device that once someone gets a hold of, there not going to be so quick to let it go. I have an iphone, am I overly impressed with it? - absolutely not, am I ever going to get rid of it? - highly unlikely, and the main reason for me is ipod/itunes. I don't want to lug around more then one device (not to mention I am ...
