Why point out that there is no support for GSM?

Why point out that there is no support for GSM if this is a VZW Phone? I've never seen an article that points out that AT&T or T-mobile phones do not have support for CDMA or EVDO. Is there some expectation that VZW will begin supporting GSM?

VZW does usually offer one or two "world phones" that can run on both GSM or CDMA. A la Blackberry Storm.

Because Verizon has made it a point to include GSM radios in its high-end smartphones over the past year. The Droid is a high-end device.

You're not serious are you? The Storm and Tour both support CDMA 850/CDMA1900/GSM 850/ GSM 900/GSM 1800/ GSM 1900/WCDMA 2100. This thing is supposed to go head-to-head with the Iphone but won't work in Europe? They better pull those 'mock the iphone' commercials.

OK so 2 phones that VZW has sold out of all the different models they have had over the years. still seems odd that an article would point it out. How many Moto phones support both CDMA and GSM?

The Z6c is the only one for Verizon that I am aware of. The Storm and Tour are not the only global phones on Verizon. I mentioned those because THIS phone is supposed to be on par with those phones and more importantly the iphone. Verizon is marketing what this phone does that the iphone doesn't. Well one thing it doesn't do that the iphone does is work in Europe, Africa and many places in South America. A flagship phone should. It is a glaring omission. Don't think Phonescoop is alone in this criticism. Gearlog and Boy Genius also pointed this out.

They point it out because people travel.. and they need to take their phone with them, and have it work in the places they go.. so GSM is a huge sell point for a lot of international travelers...

Because CDMA is a dying OLD system and they are wondering if it will support the world standard GSM for world travelers. I would also wonder if it will support G4 which is scheduled to be rolled out by the big V before those who buy this thing's contract will expire.

4G is highly unlikely. From most reports, it will probably start with laptop network adapters, not phones.

dying and old?

CDMA can handle more network traffic and has higher speeds than GSM.

CDMA is a newer technology than GSM. Europe's governments mandated GSM as a standard. FYI one cannot just take ANY stateside GSM handset to Europe and have it work there either. Only certain handsets have the GSM frequencies for Europe included (900mHz and 1800mHz). My point is that a so-called game changer like this Moto SHOULD.

Almost all except for one or two phones sold by AT&T are quad band gsm phones, for the past few years. Even their freebie cheapo phones will work worldwide.

And vise versa. Before I got my Nokia N95, I was using a Sharp V903, that did not have 850, and it worked just fine.
