It's amazing how much McCain has changed over the years. He used to fight for the little guy but his latest bill, which should really be called "The Government Internet Restriction and Campaign Contributors Confirmation Act of 2009", shows how he's totally lost touch with his original core values.

The FCC's goal is the exact opposite of what his bill is attempting to accomplish. The FCC's goal will be to prevent regulation of the Internet by the few large companies that own the backbone and, surprise, attempt to 'regulate' the content on their backbone by claiming it's theirs! When people see "regulation" they think government. But a synonym for "regulation" is "Control- look it up!

It's well documented that the guy is no technophile, and he's admitted that his familiarity with the internet just isn't close to what it should be. What's happened here is obvious: a trade group opposed to Net Neutrality (or more likely, a PAC representing one) has had a meeting with him, and given him enough info on the subject to the point where he feels compelled to legislate against it.

There's enough independent-leaning, libertarian-esque spirit in McCain that if he had any idea of what he was doing, he'd quit. John Kyl - on the other hand - would probably completely agree with the ISPs ideologically, and argue just as hard.

In this case McCain knows exactly what he is doing. He understands that if company X paid for a piece of infrastructure, then company X gets to decide how it is used. It is a private property issue to McCain. The thoughts about government regulation are legit to some degree, but that isn't McCain's real concern. He just knows to turn to allies when they're available.
