If I were you, I would back up everything before you try and load it (plus you will need everyone's pins again). My problem was that it needed to be rebooted and when it came back on the icon was no where to be found and I tried a battery pull and got the White Screen Of Death and had to reload my OS. I actually had to do it twice because BBM was not found when I reloaded the OS the first time and used the website again, and it did the same thing.

Eventually, I used the Desktop manager and unselected BBM 5.0 and it let me downgrade BBM to 4.7, after that, I used my last back up file to get most of my pin numbers back (lost 2 out of 26)

if you had the beta of bbm installed and then installed the new one, that would cause you to loose the icon. You need to uninstall beta first then install the newone.

I backed up my phone (started doing it when you said yours bricked) and downloaded the update through blackberry.com/messenger.

Seems to be working fine, and my contacts are all there. Weird. (Running stock OS)

Sorry to hear about the bricking. I have a VZW Tour Running os 5.0.0.236 and the new BBM works perfectly. Also installed it on my wife's os 4.7 BB Curve from AT&T and it works fine on that too.

Had no problem installing mine.. Downloaded it from Blackberry App World, and it installed itself after almost 10 minutes of watching the spinning hourglass, then it rebooted and works just fine.
