When you get off work, pull out the cell phone that you pay for and use that one. If you are using their property then follow their rules. Use your own device and problem solved.

First of all, there is no problem with a ban on government employees. The second part of the article speaks on a ban on truck drivers using their cell phones and they are not government employees. The federal government does not have the authority to regulate citizens use seat belts...the states do and the same will be true of regulating citizens use of cell phones. However, if they follow their past what they will likely do is coerce the states into passing laws against truck drivers and likely private citizens from using their cell phones AT ALL while driving or threaten to withhold highway funding...just as they did with seat belt laws and raising drinking ages in states to twenty-one.

I agree that the states should deal with the matter of truck drivers but seeing all of the data and evidence that is being piled up about drivers on cell phones, it is not looking good. More and more states are putting bans of some form up. I will bet you that over the next 5 years that all 50 states will have some kind of ban of cell phone use. Its coming but I think it should be done at the state level.

It may happen in some states quite easily, but there is no doubt that it will require quite a bit of arm-twisting in others. Fortunately I don't live in a Liberal state and Obama will be long out of office before it would come to pass here.

Congress does have the authority to "regulate interstate commerce" as per the constitution. I'm sure some lawyer can get some judge to agree that truck drivers are an integral part of interstate commerce and try to pass this B/S from that perspective.

Anyhow, i disagree with the movement.

If ANYTHING, truck drivers ought to be the ones who CAN use their phones on the road. Those guys are professional drivers and by and large are extremely safe. It's the rest of the morons on the road that need to hang up and drive.

This is the equivalent of telling a QB that he cant have a microphone in his helmet to talk to the coach because he needs to focus on the game. Where's the sense in that?

That's the America we live in today. No one wants to take responsibility for their own actions. Two maniacs shoot up a high school and the psychologists want to blame the parents, their teachers or their fellow students. It couldn't be because the two *bleep*ards were evil, of course. Deviant rapes and murders an eight year old child and they want to blame television and the internet. Let's blame AND hang this mofo. Give me a break! Guy plows into another vehicle while texting... It couldn't be that this guy is just an idiot and nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand persons would not be so foolish as to dare text and drive. The other 999 should be punished because this guy lacked judgment. Right? This is just sick.

I agree with this statement. I don't think its realy the cell phones that are the problem its the idiots that don't use there head when using them. They should ban stupid people from driving but they can't. I see people all the time doing stupid stuff while driving cell phones is only a small part of the larger problem.

This is what I've been ranting about on the Free Country...??? board. There is no responsibility anymore. Everybody has to point fingers. I guess if I spill hot coffee on my lap I can sue Starbucks because it was hot, not because I didn't put the lid on correctly after putting sweetener in my coffee.

If you haven't already, listen to 'I'll Sue Ya' from Weird Al Yankovic...it's funny. 😛

How about now? Still feel the same way?

I don't totally agree with your argument, but I like the way you think.

I would have to observe that alcohol/drug use places the user in a persistent state of altered consciousness- whereas texting, eating a burger or applying makeup do not cause a "general failure" of the nervous system. It's not quite apples to apples, but I can see your point.

Distracted driving is a huge problem, the causes are irrelevant. As a society we need to do something about it, and we can't simply allow all behaviors simply because we can't restrict "all" unsafe behaviors.

A good friend of mine ;lost his father in an auto-pedestrian crash because the driver leaned over to pick up a CD to put in the player.

Doe this mean that car stereos need to be...
