Good News!

I thought the G1 couldn't get 1.6? I was actually rather upset about that. My wife and I both had the G1, I moved on to a 8900 (as cool as the Android Market is, it wasn't enough for me and oddly enough, the simplicity of the 8900 was) and am still waiting to try out a Touch Pro 2. Keeping up with the G1, MyTouch and Android however, I thought the g1 wouldn't be able to update to 1.6. I am very happy to hear different and I cant wait to see the changes on my wifes phone.

I'm gonna call her at her lunch break and tell her the "Good News!"

Ty Scoop.

I agree completely! I have the G1 and heard similar news, I sure hope the rumors are wrong! I will post a through run through when I get it.

To be a bit off topic I was hoping that the CyanogenMod Cease and Desist order would pop up on here under news as its a similar problem Google received from Apple & AT&T. Its created quite an up roar within the Android SDK developer community

Unless there are memory/processor limitations, there's nothing technical that says any phone CAN'T be ugradeable. It's more to do with the manufacturers willingness to support such an upgrade and code the OS to support the hardware. I'm guessing they rightly decided that it was too soon to stop releasing upgrades for the first Android device.

Ideally, upgrades would be available for the length of any of the initial two year contracts.

Conflicting reports leave HTC G1 owners without a real answer with respect to the G1's ability to update to Android 2.0 and beyond. Android software engineer Dave Sparks recently said, "There will come a time in the near future when we won't be able to fit the latest release on the G1 internal flash." The G1 (which currently supports Android 1.5 -- a.k.a "Cupcake") has 256MB of internal storage, and cannot run the Android operating system, nor applications, from the microSD expansion slot. When asked to corroborate Sparks' statement, T-Mobile issued a statement of its own, which reads, "We plan to continue working with Google to introduce f...

I do not understand why everyone thought this comment meant that Donut wouldn't be available to the G1. Its like watching that old "telephone" game from when i was a kid. As the rumors spread, they become strange and misconstrued. I'm sure eventually even the myTouch will be unable to upgrade to the next gen Android OS due to size limitations. I'm sure the Android phone that comes out 5 years from now will eventually be unable to update. Big deal, its not as if the phone does less than it did before Donut became available.

I'm sorta in the middle on this, Usually I think 2 years of support should be available but on the other side, I also think G1 was an early adopter item and one has ...
