What I don't understand is the article said there will be roaming charges when using the sattelite service, don't you think ATT will set up some sort of roaming agreement with this sat company, and a bundled minutes rate plan. Similar to if you go abroad to Europe, you can get a special plan for international roaming.

Satellite coverage is different from terrestrial cellular coverage, and it is FAR more expensive to offer satellite coverage. Global Star is one of the satellite providers and their plans are expensive. AT&T would not be in a position to harbor the financial cost of a roaming agreement where users don't have to pay extra.

The cost of satellite coverage is prohibitive. I looked this up to answer a forum question last night. Making that decision to roam on Globalstar should only be a last resort. At least this option will be available to those important persons.

They have Monthly and Annual Options but $50 for 50 minutes. $1 overage fee for example. I would not expect AT&T to eat that. If $1 roaming could be obtained then I would be pleasantly surprised. Globalstar should not be expected to make their rates as cheap for AT&T customers as for their own.

You guys are missing the point. Obviously satellite coverage won’t work indoors therefore this isn’t supposed to supplement ATT’s coverage.
As for satellite coverage the area described is rather small, if they offered world satellite coverage when needed that would be a little better.
But as the article says this phone/service will be offered to business and government first and if you read between the lines there’s nothing for regular consumers yet.
I think this phone and service is meant for people who routinely travel outside cellular coverage.

When you go to Europe you pay $5.99/month to lower your per minute rate from $1.29 to $0.99. You texting rate is $0.50 outgoing, free incoming, and data is $0.0195/kb.

Missing the point. The coverage from space is only supposed to be in the US and several other areas. You pay out the ass for other sat coverage that works worldwide. I could imagine $.50 a minute which is fine. Data I imagine would run a bit more then it is now. You have to think, this is a new company putting up new sats to open up a new market company. They are GOING to be competitive, but not cheap as what a person would have now.
