It could free up the towers somewhat IF a lot of ppl got these. It won't be massivly adopted but att could dream of what this could mean for them. Especially if 3G/LTE cost so much to deploy via tower.

What if you could get faster speeds via landline (unlikely but here's to dreaming)?

IF...

The only way to free the load is for the iphone users (mainly) to get the femtocells. And for them to pay to get one of these boxes, and use them at home, well it would already infuriate some of them more. One option AT&T could do is give these free to iphone users.

BTW, having this would not guarantee freeing up the towers. Most users (including iphone owners) use their data on the road, and I don't think they will be connecting to femtocells all over the place. (Isnt that what a cell tower is for?). Having this is effectively your landline with a guaranteed signal.

Only problem, is most people in one's home use their regular wifi on their iPhones. So why chalk up $150 to AT&T for this?

This device is good for calls in area's where the service is mediocre, I can't see any other reason to use it.
