This were free then this could be a good product. Eliminating home phones because it gives users unlimited calling within the home or its area where it will be deployed.

But I highly doubt that it will be free because its AT&T and only Sprint seems to "Need" customers right now so I just don't see them wanting nor caring about attracting customers like flies to doo-doo.

From AT&T's page:

Available unlimited minute plans – individual or FamilyTalk plans.

Since they mention that "plans" are available, I presume, you're not getting unlimited calling if you use the device. However, whether the device requires its own plan (it shouldn't) or whether they're just talking about the regular cell plan, is unclear.

It's really not a landline replacement device. It's more for improving coverage in homes or offices that are in weak signal areas.

I really don't get why customers have to essentially provide they're own coverage! And with reguards to this is suppose to help with improving coverage in homes & offices, isn't that what 850 3G is suppose to do???

See update to article. The device costs $150, and users can choose to pay $20/mo (OUTRAGEOUS!!!) for unlimited talking plans using the MicroCell.

🤣

$20.00/month on top of the already ridiculous price plans, GTFOH. Like Jayshmay said, Why should you have to pay extra at all let alone THIS MUCH extra to provide/enhance signal in your home when thats their job?

This is a joke.

The only benefit Is the data because of four users at a time but then once again your already paying your internet provider since it has to be connected via broadband internet. SO its like paying for a router.

So wouldn't it be more beneficial to just get a router and use VOIP so you don't have to pay $20 a month.

I presume this would be in lieu of VOIP. Most VOIP providers charge a monthly fee.

www.vonage.com for $24 a month unlimited calling to all phones in the US and Canada plus unlimited free calling to most landlines around the world. There is a small charge for international calling to cell phones. This is by far the least expensive way to call unlimited to so many places.

There's plenty of free VOIP services - Skype to Skype calls (regardless of platform) are free, and lots of other VOIP/IM services have the same thing.

The big advantage of a microcell is that it's the same phone number & device you have at all other times, so you're always being contacted by the same portal. For people that don't mind having multiple numbers/contact methods/contact pools, it's well worth the cash to stick with VOIP.

Given how terrible AT&T was in my old place, I might have sprung for this, but in my new house, it's decent. AT&T signal is still lousy most places I go, though.

Maybe they shouldn't offer the unlimited option at all? I don't know that it is outrageous. I suppose a user could simply change their calling plan to AT&T's Unlimited plan for $99.99. Of course that could be expensive with Family Talk plans.

Your article says the service is free.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
It costs $150 and service is free. Alternately, users can opt to pay $20 per month for unlimited talking.
Doesn't sound that OUTRAGEOUS to me.
Well, no network is 100%. For example, every year my family goes on a ski trip and cell coverage is awful in the condo complex we rent at.
Now once a year wouldn't be worth it for us, but I could see where an owner of the condo, who uses it regularly (the area has summer actvities, as well), would find the device useful.
It could be very useful but AT&T would kill the game in response to Sprint's anymobile anytime if they made this available for free. They can afford it.
Not that it would be better then anymobile for anytime.
It always amazes me how some wish to spend money that is in someone else's pocket. If I were an AT&T investor I do not think that I would be happy if they gave away a service that they could make money from.
