What I want to know....

is how they know what numbers are mobile? I know people that have ported old-time landline numbers that they have had over 30 years to their cell phones.

I also know of original cell numbers that were ported to landline numbers.

And what about numbers that port between after this launches?

This may sound made up but I heard it from a very reliable source and I'm sure if I or you did some research we could find the correct company name (I dont feel like researching lol), but there is a database that compiles that its a mobile device. Actually it is known that if there is a complaint that a customer says its not a landline etc. and the bill shows it is - there is no farther escalatation that can be done because that information is taken from that database and it CANNOT be disupted!

in the Sprint forum
beyond what we see (carriers & home lines) each cell phone/landline provider is assigned a list/group of phone numbers and the system can tell where each came from. when you port in/out the sytem recognizes that and saves it. theirs a website(cant remember what it was) but i used it alot at work i can type ANY phone and it will let me know what provider its on. hope this helps 😁

Without a doubt there are databases that record such information, however, seems as if it would be very difficult to constantly update.

For landline caller ID, it can take up to 72 hours for name changes to update when a mobile number is assigned to someone with a different name than previously, and even then there are two competing companies that handle the databases.

It think this ia a great concept, particularly since most people rely much more on their cell phones these days than a landline; with the exception of when you have to call a business.

yea true that..

thats what was told to me at work. (i work for a cell provider i dont want to say who because then people think im taking sides or call me a hypocrit) whitch im not.

i will state facts and opinions for what ever phone and cell provider.

i havent had a line for about 3 years no complaints their. :0)

There is a tool which identifies the carrier be it landline or wireless. It is nothing difficult.

I don't work for Sprint any longer but one way of tracking it is point of origin and call destination. If you make a call to a cell phone, unless it goes to voicemail the call will always make its last connection to a wireless tower. Landlines will always be through a landline connection. More than likely sprint will use a third party service like Fonefinder. That will track calls as either having a final destination to a landline or a cell phone. However fonefinder is not 100% accurate. If Sprint were smart they would use a system that combines both processes a dynamic data base that updates by carrier as well as a landline/cell tower tracking system. There will be a dispute process in place, but it will not be perfect.
