Hmmmm...I wonder if company X were MetroPCS or Leap? Wouldn't be Verizon and probably not AT&T. The Democrats would either not approve such a merger or force divestitures making it unappealing for the two mega companies. It makes me wonder if it were possibly not a wireless company but perhsps Comcast or one of the other cable companies.

Isn't Virgin a MVNO...not a full fledged carrier? I don't see why there'd be any kind of "divestitures".

The FCC is not likely to allow VZW & AT&T to just "buy up" even more market share.

That and at least with VZW, buying an MVNO just doesn't seem to be a good strategy. Most MVNOs operate at much lower costs than contracted and carrier-branded prepay, and VZW would rather just have the contracted or prepay revenue.

I guess I didn't realize the FCC was in the business of regulating "market share". I just thought the FCC regulated radio spectrum, and considering Virgin Mobile has none, I didn't figure this would be the realm of the FCC.

The FCC has a mandate to oversee healthy competition w/in the services it regulates, especially those that rely upon public spectrum. To allow an already overblown wireless carrier (e.g. VZW or AT&T) to use anti competitive means to steal away additional market share from a smaller competitor (e.g. Sprint) would contravene that mandate.

Interesting thought Azeron. You are correct about Verizon and ATT. I don't see how Verizon would've benefit from such buy anyway. But what about IPCS? They and Sprint have been in the arena more than a few times.

The unnamed suitor would have to be an entity content to operate as an MVNO on the Sprint network or able to migrate Virgin Mobile subs to its own network.

Those considerations would likely rule out both MetroPCS & Leap (dba Cricket), as neither would be content to operate on the Sprint network and neither has sufficient coverage to migrate all Virgin Mobile subs to its own network.

And, agreed, it would not be VZW or AT&T. While either could readily migrate Virgin Mobile subs to its own network, both have worn out their welcome w/ mergers & acquisitions.

It could be T-Mobile USA, as Virgin Mobile in the UK is an MVNO on the T-Mobile network. It could be a cable company, such as Comcast or Time Warner or Cox, all of which have wir...
