First att requires all smart phones to have data plans. Then it says now they can have wifi for free? I would not call it free. I think this is an attempt to prevent data users from bogging down there network due to the poor capacity issues of gsm.

It's pretty much SOP for companies to say FREE, when they really mean, INCLUDED IN THE PRICE.

all carriers require data plans for smartphones. and if the phone didnt have wifi before then it would be considered free cause wifi doesnt come with ur data plans.

No all carriers do not require data plans for smart phones. Sprint requires the data plan for the palm pre because the phone literally can not operate with out it, but with that exception sprint does not require you to have a data plan.

In regards to the rest of your message it was to incoherent to understand. What ever it was i am sure it did nothing to address my original assertion. that giving free wifi to a phone with data plan is pointless.

It wasn't incoherent in the least. I understood his meaning. Since they're adding hotspot access and not raising the price most were already paying, it does make it free from the standpoint of the customer.

Whether or not the company requires a data plan or not is irrelevant. WiFi is simply an additional technology that expands the capacity of a device to access data at minimal cost to the carrier. The fact is that no carrier has 100% coverage and typical WiFi speeds are as fast or faster than the vast majority of currently deployed wireless data services, so it is far from pointless.

Does Sprint provide hotspot access to customers who have a voice only plan?

Actually since you ask, Sprint does have several public wifis located nation wide and yes they are free, in fact they are free to any one who wants to use them, whether they are a Sprint customer or not.

stevelvl can't cite his source because he is pulling it out of his butt.

There are a few airports that do have unlimited free wifi but its hampered by site blocking, and its not that Sprint is doing it for free its the airport paying for the internet service and then giving it to you for free. Hotels do the same thing you can't get on P2P services in an airport or hotel.

point being sprint still technically makes u have a data plan for certain phones. so all carriers DO mandate data plans for certain phones.

the other part i was talking about which idk how u for incoherent was u dont need a data plan to use wifi so wifi would be considered free if your phone didnt have it before.

your phone doesnt have it and at&t adds it for free = free wifi.

It's free wifi @ places like Mcd's, Starbucks, perhaps airports wherever a business is using wifi with ATT.

Yeah, Mcd's does charge for wifi, if you go there with just a laptop. But not with an ATT smartphone.

Yeah, yeah that's right!!! Your neighbors is free!!!

I have an app on my Nokia N95 that lets me use the WiFi as a wireless router and I use my laptop! That's @ my apt, on the go I use my N95 for web browsing.

Listen i do see the anger here. It is a pointless stunt on AT&T to offer free wifi when infact all wifi is already free. i work at a radioshack and right now if i wanted to i can take a palm pre or a htc mogul or any other wifi enabled phone and, UNACTIVATED, i can browse the web for free.

with ATT you have sim cards but the wifi is still free unactivated. it just sounds good to offer something for free wheather the customer knows better or not.

P.S. The Pre and the Instinct (m800 and s30) require data on a sprint plan. blackberry and htc snap and some other htc phones require it NOW if you activate it NEW but if you had an old plan before you can extend current plan if you are UPGRADEING

hope that clears up some of the arguing
